Lime juice added to the red onions can really help the flavour, I'll often cold brine red onion with equal parts lime juice and non-brewed condiment. It'll do for a single onion for a small quick batch.

The plastic is on the cucumbers to stop them going flaccid – seriously, they last a lot longer.
