Whatever microbes, bacteria, germs, or animal droppings are on the outside of a fruit are introduced to the inside when you cut into it. Many people have touched the fruit before you get your hands on it. I clean the outside of my watermelon. It too goes in the sink and thoroughly cleaned before I cut into it.
