Whether it is a can of chili or left over gravy it is nice to have a handle that doesn't get as hot as the rest of it. Sometimes I cover with a paper towel and a rubber band, other times plastic wrap with a few holes punctured. Other times I put a small corelle plate on top, which is also microwaveable.
One feature not mentioned is the improvement in recent years of the handle that ends in a hook instead of forming a full D, allowing them to stack better.
