If you really want to avoid gluey/goopy mash, just stop overworking them. Dont whip or blend them. Use a manual masher or a ricer if you have. The more you work it, the gooier it gets

That would be to much butter.. when that happens I add a little more butter milk and then add some instant potatoes always works very well
