A lot of times the explosions happen when someone lets the pellets run out, or when you get a temporary jam in the auger, the second one is more rare, the person fills their hopped leaves it running, the pellets hit the igniter and the gases in the grill explode, so another big one is always watch your pellet level and make sure you have enough fuel, I've had the explosion happen once, on my old pit boss luckily it was fine and still usable but scared the bejeebus out of me, that was back when I was new to the pellet smokers game.

Great info. for those new the pellet smokers. The only correction I would say, is that the ignition rod does not operate at all on most smokers once it’s above its lowest temp setting. Some have a relight setting that will turn on the rod if the temps fall well below that lowest temp setting. You can verify this by just putting on a watt meter on your pit and you will notice 150-200 watts to start up and then even at low temps the amount of power used is in the sub 50 watts mean in the rod is off and the only power used is to run the auger, controller and fan which use minimal power.
