In USA if you just want the steaks, it is cheaper to just buy filet mignon by the pound. You need to want the other stuff to make the whole tenderloin worth it.

Don't cut ANYTHING off it. You've paid for that fat, and it's tasty! Plus you're wasting meat. If you want to lose even more money, sure go ahead and start trimming it. But otherwise it's better tasting, and a ''better deal'' if you leave it as-is right out of the package.
