Use sour cream instead of water in your Pillsbury (and probably other brands) and you will have a cake that stays moist.
You can substitute soda to make a cake.
Cut the oil with applesauce
I don't understand why people use cake mix at all. It doesn't really save much time and usually uses cheaper ingredients.
I always use Duncan high box cake mix
I use butter to grease the pan and add walnut halves to the batter. The walnut halves release oil while it's baking and it makes the cake moist.
