In the American mideast (Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio etc) a pawpaw is the largest native fruit and not well-known because its thin skin bursts if there is a lot of rain near the time of ripening (early September 2022 this year) so it doesn't travel well. People pretty much only know about it if they live close to the natural habitat. That being said, it's not a papaya, but its texture may be very similar and its taste is often quite sweet at peak ripening. Right now ALL the pawpaws are ripening in our backyard, so we have lots of fruit. I'm going to use this recipe as it looks so tasty–I may not even need to add sugar!
Can I use cooking oil instead of melted butter?
Can I use margarine instead of butter?
