Hi so I removed the valve from my gas bottle today and it popped like a bottle of champagne x10 and there was a strong smell of gas. Is this normal? It's like there was some built up pressure or something but it scared the crap out of me

I have an old two burner camping stove my Dad used on picnics. It's much better made than modern ones, so I want to get it up and running. Only problem is it has a large brass female screw with a small regulator behind it. I had thought of fitting a modern regulator but that would not fit in the fitted metal case. Is there a male threaded cylinder fitting that I could connect to?
