i literally thought it was just a capitalist scheme to get entire countries to buy new kitchen tools. funny how a few weeks later there was a "math error'
What I dislike about ALL the spatulas available now is that they are too thick to slide easily under the food in the pan. I rely on a spatula that's over 100 years old. It is metal, extremely thin and flexible. I even use it (very carefully) on my nonstick pans over a year now with no damage to the pans.
I started phasing out plastic tools a couple years ago when I realized all that damage and missing bits had to go somewhere… obviously it was melting into my food. Same with the teflon. If its chipping away – you're eating it. I dont care if they say its not as bad as stated. I don't think we're meant to ingest these things. Ill be bummed it silicone ends up being a problem. But im already leaning toward only using it cold and avoiding and heated application
“A math error in the report…” How convenient: let’s slip in a math error so the entire population of Earth gets worked up about black plastic. Every one will know our name and we’ll be famous!!!
PS: Because there’s no way the researchers didn’t triple-check at least ten times before publishing their results.
1:14, that hole in the black spatula, I see what you did, because I did the exact same thing. Yeah, never try to scrape the inside of a blender with a silicone spatula, the blade tip will gouge out the silicone.
Ever since silicone became the new rage, I can’t help but feel that it’s just a matter of time before we hear the breaking news about it’s cancer causing dangers.
"All the winning tools use virgin or new plastic" That's… not necessarily a good thing, it means we're drilling and pumping more oil to produce that stuff. I've been slowly adjusting to carbon steel since PTFE nonstick is not durable and uses fluoridated compounds (which we're starting to find are much more nasty than the "miracle chemicals" they were once thought of).
Do make sure to purchase ONLY brands you trust, and give the bargain basement (*cough*dollar*cough*) stores a pass on their black plastic tools. I had one melt onto my brand new ceramic non-stick frying pan and had to throw it away.
Wooden bamboo… OR JUST ANY TYPICAL WOOD UTENSIL. Everyone is now taking about bamboo, but wood utensils have been around for millennia, and not just bamboo. And perhaps, a tiny fraction of the bamboo cost.
This is serious and you didn’t give the study the respect it deserved. Mistakes were made, owned up to, and corrected. The results were true that recycled electronics plastic is being used in cooking utensils. No amount of fire retardant is safe in food. Zero is the scale. I am still getting rid of all black plastic utensils and have switched to stainless steel, silicone, and wood.
Thank You for clarifying this…apparently many newspapers saw this article and re-hashed it on the tv news so everyone went and got rid of the black plastic utensils…not in the trash but gave it to the donation places…saw lots of it at the Goodwill the other daub😐
I’ve never liked plastic utensils. They’re just a bad idea. Who wants to risk melting them, eating pieces of them and they’re not even sting enough to do what they’re supposed to do. I use stainless steel and wood utensils .
I avoided the black plastic kitchen tools simply because they kept getting melted due to high temps. I tend to stick with wood, bamboo, or silicone for my surfaces that scratching is a concern, metal otherwise.
Ha – Google 'Silicone utensils bad for you' – then 'Wooden utensils bad for you' then 'bamboo utensils bad for you' and finally 'stainless steel utensils bad for you' I'm not saying black plastic isn't bad it undoubtedly is too. Whatever, use common sense don't burn them and don't leave them sitting in your pot of food on the stove ffs
Two comments on the video: 1. "Thumb up" for virgin plastic? That is just wasteful. Using recycled materials is better for the planet. 2. I had an issue with using a silicone brush on a hot pan. I got a little bit of melting on the tips. I don't think my pan was above the 450 deg F I have seen listed as the safe temperature for silicone, so it makes me wonder if silicone utensils are not all the same. Mine were budget selections.
Rule of thumb use plastic(Silicone) seldomly if any. Wood and metal is best, also as far as cooking pots and pans, stainless steel or ceramic these plastic and coatings are known as PFAS also known as forever chemicals the least we’re exposed to it the better.
The study has huge problems.
There's nothing about black plastic tools that says "great idea!"
i literally thought it was just a capitalist scheme to get entire countries to buy new kitchen tools. funny how a few weeks later there was a "math error'
Not only was there a math error, but the calculation was based on daily use at high heat. If that is not your scenario…
Can't go wrong with wood or metal
No they didn’t say they were safe even at the lower number. The opposite in fact
🌹
Just get rid of all the plastic in your life

I divested myself of all the black plastic utensils. Better safe than sorry.

Where is the link for the full story talked about in the end?
Silicone is great but absorbs and releases detergent flavors and smells if washed in a dish washer. Washing by hand solves this problem. 👍
The study had incorrect math and overstated the severity of their findings. They had to make changes
Using them for years
I use metal spoons and forks
1:14, that hole in the black spatula, I see what you did, because I did the exact same thing. Yeah, never try to scrape the inside of a blender with a silicone spatula, the blade tip will gouge out the silicone.
I am Gen-X…my asbestos, lead infused body isn't bothered by black plastic.
Ever since silicone became the new rage, I can’t help but feel that it’s just a matter of time before we hear the breaking news about it’s cancer causing dangers.
What about the white plastic utensils? Was there a study done on those? 🧐
racist…

You and the information you provided are sincerely appreciated.

Black plastic cooking tools are bad—simply because they are made exceptionally cheaply and so poorly thay are ineffective.
Adam Ragusea has a decent summary of the study and mentions the math error. But you can also go straight to the source.
I've been switching my utensils to stainless steel.
Sorry, I'll continue to use my black stuff; if McGill University (Canadian) says it's okay, IT's OKAY. No KNEE-JERK reaction from me.

Loooooll only option it the wood ones nothing silicone or plastic #EVER!!!!!!! It's common sense

For everyone saying wood, what about the fact that wood is porous and harbors mold and bacteria?

Ok great. I just threw away I’ll my black plastic utensils because I’m getting older and news stories scare me into buying stuff now

i did my transition to stainless steel and bamboo now and trashed plastic so I identify as a stainlessbamboo person on my kitchen😅😅😅😅
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Safe limits?
Determined by who?
I do not trust them.
GO STAINLESS!!!
Silicone is definately one I expect to be deem hazardous in a decade or so. Also bamboo; due to the laminating adhesive of unknown origin.
Safe, just like the COVID vaccine.
I like to use my silicone and wooden kitchen tools. I need to buy more stainless steel.

Way about black plastic food containers?
