Here's the recipe my el cooks! 🔽
1Cup ketchup
2tbsp brown sugar
1.5tsp honey
1tbsp soy sauce
1tsbp Worcestershire sauce
1.5tsp salt
1.5tsp black pepper
1tsp liquid smoke (optional)
Simmer for 20 minutes (lowest heat)
Keeps for 1 month in airtight container inside the fridge!

I used to make a similar sauce for my patients at a nursing home, as I could use my sugar substituted ingredients or my sugar free things for my diabetics (still got snapped at despite the fact it has literally no sugar and followed every guideline they set for dietary requirements). My dialysis patient used to beg me to make his lunch for his appointments it was so good😂

It's weird how good Ketchup is as a base.
I live in the PNW and all the Chinese restaurants here have a sauce called "Red Sauce" or as I called it as a kid "Spicy Ketchup"
I looked for the recipe for years cause grocery stores didn't seem to sell it. Ironically, little me was pretty spot on. It was Ketchup with the Chinese Mustard mixed in. Add some white sugar and dilute it a bit with water to thin it out. Cause I like being silly and I live in the PNW, I use some Beaver Deli Honey Mustard alongside the Chinese Mustard to help with the sweet and tangy. I love this sauce. Great for meats and fried food.
Once I explained this to an Asian friend of mine, they also said that her mom used to make a very similar sauce but they used Chili Sauce (not the sweet one) instead of Chinese Mustard.
Regardless, my point is (other than try the sauce), is that Ketchup is this weirdly versatile sauce that can be alchemized into many other amazing sauces. Probably cause it's just a tomato base with seasonings and sugar, haha.
