BBQ Pizza on Gas Grill | Grilled Pizza Tips

Summer is too hot to bake, but you can turn your grill into a pizza oven and bbq pizza like a pro. This video shows you two methods for grilling pizza on a gas grill; one straight on the grates and another with a cast iron pan.

This method is inspired from my trip to Timmy’s Legendary Grilled Pizza. It’s one of the best pizza places I’ve been. A mix of their uncommon pizza toppings and their method of grilling cranks out excellent pizza. I had to talk to the grill master and find out how he did it.

The secret to the method is putting the cheese directly on the crust, which ensures that it melts. Most grilled pizza gives a burnt crust and cold toppings, but not this method.

Recipe:
1 Pizza Dough
Cheese
Add your favorite toppings

PRO TIP: Make up an extra dough or two so you can do a practice run. Dough is cheap and it’s easy to burn your first one.

  1. I just use a pizza stone on my natural gas Weber Genesis and use the same temperature as recommend for a regular oven… Turns out just the same 😋. PS – Don't forget a very light dusting with flour to keep the crust from sticking to the stone.

  2. Hi ..I love it ..Going to have a party and a change of pace from the regular ..so will have pizza ..I will be using regular charcoal brickets … any thing I should know to not burn the crust..

  3. I used an old cast iron flat about 12 inches. Weber was showing 700 degrees . Made the pizza inside in the cast iron flat. Started the cook on gas stove to give crust head start (about 30 secs or hear dough popping. Put cast iron and pizza into 700 degree Weber. About 3 mins later pizza.

  4. I tried both but I still feel like its better constructed in the traditional manner and with a pizza stone or cast iron. Cool idea though. The real thing to understand is the dough thickness. Too thin and it burns.

  5. This is on the menu for tomorrow. I recently bought a cast iron pizza pan from the Lodge outlet store. It works great in the oven, just preheat it first. It will be interesting to try it on the grill. I am going to put a few pieces of smoke wood on the side of the grill for imitation wood fired flavor. A wood fired pizza oven is on the wish list…..

  6. This pizza is so easy…just did another one on the grill grates again…Toppings: Shredded Mozzarella & Provolone cheese, Sauteed Squash, Sauteed Shiitake mushrooms/Onions/Peppers/Garlic mixture, Italian Sausage, Fresh Basil & Cilantro…All added in the order listed…Once again, Outstanding! Too bad I can't post a picture…it was awesome, though! Thanks, again for the info on this pizza on the grill!

  7. Thanks for the info & tips! I tried it, today, and it came out excellent. Your times and burner settings/temperature range are spot on for my Weber Genesis grill. I did, however, brush each side with extra virgin olive oil just before it went on the grill to be sure the dough wouldn't stick…then, cheese on first then the topping (Sauteed onions, peppers, mushrooms & garlic) and a little more cheese with fresh basil, thyme and cilantro from my garden. We'll be doing this one again and this recipe is so quick & easy…this recipe is a keeper! Also, I grilled directly on the grill grates.
