MATOSINHOS, PORTUGAL – Some say that Portugal has the best seafood in the world and today we’re going to find out why. With pristine cold water Atlantic ocean spanning the west and south coasts, Portugal is a seafood paradise. Today we’re eating our way through Matosinhos, a port and fishing town just outside of Porto.

Huge thank you to Taste Porto (https://tasteporto.com/) for taking me on this incredible tour – they are the best! Thank you AndrĆ© ApolinĆ”rio and Ricardo Brochado, it was amazing to hang out with them. Check them out for incredible food tours in Porto.

Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos – The local market is one of the best places to begin your seafood tour. The market is clean and organized and home to extremely fresh seafood of the day. You can also get all sorts of vegetables and fruits while you’re at it.

Restaurante Tito 2 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/2jbGqUBNa8tYFLyS7) – Andre arranged for us to go to one of his favorite seafood restaurants in Matosinhos. Here you can choose the fish you want, and they will grill it, or prepare just the way you want it. The Rodovalho Grelhado – Grilled Turbot was fantastic, as was the Lulas – Grilled Squid, and the Pargo Grelhado – Grilled Porgi.

Restaurante Os LusĆadas (https://maps.app.goo.gl/W8DTiynoWQH7aSzn8) – But the highlight of this Portugal seafood tour was Restaurante Os LusĆadas, an upper scale seafood restaurant that serves the absolute best and freshest seafood you can imagine. It was indeed among the best quality seafood I’ve had in my life. We had AmĆŖijoas Ć  BolhĆ£o Pato – Clams Portuguese Style, a huge seafood cocktail platter for 4, Arroz de lavagante – Lobster Rice, and Robalo ao sal – Sea Bass Salt FlambĆ©e!

If you love seafood, Matosinhos is a place you have to visit when you’re in Portugal!

Thank you again to AndrƩ and Ricardo from Taste Porto (https://tasteporto.com/)!

  1. Pure joy and magic in experiencing Portuguese seafood !!! Your excitement was absolutely contagious. It felt like you were rising to a new level of karma with every bite šŸ‘šŸ„³. Congratulations Mark, keep delivering those spontaneous reactions and experiences !!!

  2. That fish market looks more like a brand new modernist train station and every big city needs to take notes and copy this model if we want to inspire people to shop and eat locally grown food. Street markets should be made to be an irresistible draw to encourage locals to visit them consistently. Good facilities, good product, good entertainment and good street foods are all necessary for a city market to thrive IMO.

  3. I was in Villamoura, Portugal in 2004 and I absolutely love their different varieties of seafood! So awesome!!! They are very expensive in Toronto, Canada. It was such a treat when I was there! Thanks, Mark for always bringing back so much wonderful memories of food during all my travels!!

  6. If I have to choose between seafood and the bible… for sure it is bible!!! I am ashamed of being catholic after the scandals of paedophile priests, and the last one Canon Christopher Tuvkwell, the former Dean of Westminster Cathedral, Cardinal Vincent took under his wings of protection…, and so he did with the one befote Tuckwell too!!! You do not have shame, but IDO!!!!

  7. My husband and I visited Portugal in 2022. We stayed in Lisbon and Porto. We loved Porto more and our best meal was from Tito in Matosinhos. They are so generous with their portions and the seafood was so fresh, and that’s coming from someone from
