  1. I was so excited to make this bread and I fluffed up the flour and added it perfectly. I go to mix the flour with the milk and egg and it was still soupy like cake batter. I couldn’t get it off my hands and it ended up a huge mess. I kept adding flour until it finally stopped sticking to my hands like wet glue. I think I ended up with at least 4 1/2 cups of flour.

  2. Very tasty, but didn't work out on first try.
I made this true to John's recipe and even my step-by-step looked like his photos (though I used the baking sheet/parchment), however, after 25 mins in the oven it was very dark on the outside and bottom, but still not fully cooked on the inside as evidenced by the bubbling butter in the centre of my 'X'. So I covered it with foil and did 5 more mins. It still didn't get fully cooked, but I had to take it out due to outside doneness. I'm able to at least use a good portion of the outer parts for toast and it tastes really good! Next time I will try a lower temperature or maybe even divide the loaves.

  3. John, love your show. A minor quibble with your Irish history though. Everything was expensive in Ireland in years past. The British had specific laws passed by Parliament to starve the Irish people starting in 1825 or so. So while yeast may have been hard to afford for large parts of the populace, I believe the genesis of soda bread was the low gluten content of locally grown wheat flour. Soda bread can be made with barley and other grains without gluten, too. Cheers.

  4. I just found your channel and i had to make it right away and it turned out great! I love how you explained the whys and alternatives so I understand the process better and get excellent result. Thank you. This is the best Irish soda bread ever!

  5. I just made that bread. I used fruits I had soaking in rum for Christmas so the dough was a bit cake like so I just poured it on parchment paper in the skillet. So delicious crusty on the outside and rough cake like on the inside

  6. My grand used to make this. And since she passed I watched this video and decided to try it out. Went step by step and it turned out awful. I've never made bread or any good at baking. But I was enthusiastic. Now my soul just hurts and a sticky mess on my counter 😢

  7. Tried this and it came out well. Recipe says 57 grams of butter, you say 75 in the video. Recipe instructs adding the dried fruit to the dry ingredients mixture before the butter, buttermilk and eggs, which I did not after. Which is right? The resulting loaf is huge! I noticed the 12 servings bit too late.
