It's almost like oven mitts should come in different sizes.
That being said, I use the gloves that the fire department use when fighting fires. They're not that hard to find, have the form factor of a standard work glove, and are incredibly heat resistant. They're also pretty cheap. Just buy them at a specialty store.

Commenters! I never thought of welding gloves! My fingers and arms thank you! It’s now a tip I’m using. Thank y’all
Don’t buy the OXO unless you have small hands. I just bought one online and will be returning it. The useable length of the thumb is about 1.25” (~30mm). It looks longer from the outside, but the liner shortens it internally. Also, OXO claims it’s machine washable but you can’t remove the liner. So I’m not sure how you can dry it easily. I have one of those mitts with a center thumb (orka brand). Looks odd, but the thumb is wide (and long) enough that it works. For reference, I usually buy gloves that are size L or XL.
When I think of "oven mitt" I think of one that is used to take hot things out of the oven. Not to use on the range with a pot or pan. I'd use a "pot holder" for that.
As for the oven mitts, I have the ones that were chosen with the silicone outside and they do work well for me when baking. My only problem is how do you clean the inside which is some sort of fabric. They do get grimy from cooking and putting them on and off. They are impossible to turn inside out to try and clean.
Y'all should re-test coolers. CNet just uploaded a vid on their recent testing.
I've got big hands and have had no problems with the Ove-Glove
tea towels are my go to
I’ve never found any oven mitts that work for me. I use 2 thick-but-flexible potholders if I need to grab something heavy and hot. I guess my hands are “freakishly large” (but not larger than my husband’s). I use welders leather gloves for loading the wood stove, but I think they would be too cumbersome for hot pans. I use those gloves for manipulating bread boules once the crust is formed. Sigh…they should make good mitts in sizes.
I love these reviews, however, it's starting to get a bit questionable that OXO wins SO many of comparisons
I'm usually a total obsessive freak fan of all things OXO, but when I bought the OXO oven mitt I found it very tight while I was putting it on and taking it off. I don't think I have particularly huge hands.
There is something wrong with a review that eliminates a great glove because it doesn’t work for people who have big hand. The Ove glove is our favorite glove. I wouldn’t use anything else. I can hold hot pans indefinitely. It allows all of your fingers to move. I wear two, one on each hand. The Ove glove should only be eliminated if it doesn’t work well for anyone. This review really turned me off on America’s Test Kitchen reviews.
"…the upper hand." — GROAN!
Anyway, count me as a vote for the form factor of the square mitts. My favorite mitts in my house have that shape. Unfortunately, they're wearing out and I haven't found anyone making similar ones today, and I agree that the connected design is awful. I'd be tempted to get those ones that are connected, and just cut them apart.
As far as the winners go, the Oxo mitts, well…based on my experience with other silicone brands, I'm skeptical I'd like those. On the other hand, my kitchen is filled with Oxo products, and all of them are straight up winners (except one: not a big fan of the wire cheese slicer I have…the wire likes to pop off too easily while you're slicing cheese). So knowing nothing else, I can still easily believe those are the best, despite my skepticism. 🙂
Over six decades I've had occasions to use a variety of oven mitts with large hands, In general, I've found that any mitt style has limited my ability to safely grip and maintain control of hot utensils including trays, utensils, pots, lids and pans. After first encountering the Ove Glove, I've found it to be efficient in all situations, have two in service, a couple of new ones still in boxes should the need arise and have given a couple as gifts in past years.
I've had good results including them with my washing and have no plans to give them up for any alternative.
“Here is the best oven mitt”… Everybody at Cook’s -“hand me that kitchen towel”.
Oxo wins another one
I’ve watched hundreds of episodes of ATK and CC and everyone uses a towel. The only time I find an oven mitt necessary is when preheating a cast iron skillet to 450° for steaks. I have small hands and most products sold are just much too large.
I hate those useless double mitts.
i use welding gloves. super cheap. tough as nails.
Gotta discuss clean up. The silicone gloves clean up much easier
How about testing a cut resistant or cut proof glove? The ones that will keep me from slicing my fingers to the bone.
careful on the materials you purchase some oven mitts still contain asbestos filler which is a fire retardant but carcinogenic
🌼
All hail OXO! ❤️❤️❤️
