Buy the winning mandoline:
Full review and results chart:
You don’t have to be a restaurant chef to appreciate a good mandoline. Want to know how to cut vegetables quickly and safely? These tools can thin-slice, julienne, and (in some cases) waffle-cut produce far faster than a skilled cook wielding a sharp knife can, and with utter precision. That uniformity is at least as valuable as the time savings—and not just for cosmetic reasons. When cuts are uneven, so is cooking. We wanted to know: What’s the best mandoline?
We tested 9 products in our kitchen mandoline review to find the best one:
Swissmar Börner Original V-Slicer Plus Mandoline
Kyocera Adjustable Slicer with Handguard
Progressive Prepworks Julienne and Slicer
OXO Good Grips V-Blade Mandoline Slicer
Norpro Mandoline Slicer/Grater with Guard
Zyliss 2-in-1 Handheld Slicer
Kuhn Rikon Thick & Thin Mandoline
Chef’n Pull’n Slice mandoline
Microplane Adjustable Slicer with Julienne Blade
But for a mandoline to be truly useful in a home kitchen, not just an appliance you break out for the occasional vegetable gratin or elegantly shingled fruit tart, it must be easy to set up, clean, and store. And given that you’re working with sharp blades, it must also be as safe to use as it is efficient.

Got one as a master chef
Benriner 3695 BN-3 Japanese Handheld Mandolin Slicer is very good
$31 in 2014. $59 in 2023. 200% inflation in 9 yrs but the Fed still keeps posting 8% yearly inflation. Mmmkay.
So so informative…. Came here to find out how to use my silly new contraption and then slapped myself for not investigating before I purchased impulsively..
So well explained. 👏👏
good reviews
Ordering "Swissmar Börner Original V-Slicer Plus Mandoline" after 8 years of this video. It is not priced $55 on Amazon! Gosh, inflation!
I have this one and I agree it has maintained sharpness for years,
But I'm looking for a very fine julienne slicer and this isn't it.
Its been V slicer for over 20 years. I did find the vintage blue one like we had as kids because it could vary the thicknesses – but V slicer is the fav!
I thought she was better on the bigbang theory.
I'm really curious why there isn't a Benriner in your choices?? Clearly, the most popular mandolin used by professional chefs today… BAR NONE!
Your recommendations were garbage.
I lost skin so many times so…. I'm here now lol
Great review – thank you!
That's the one I have. It fell apart after 40 years. Piece-o-Junk. Hard to store the attachments too.
I can tell from my own experience: that Börner mandoline endorsed on 3'30" is an almost perfect one, and very cheap.
My Fav no bs review channel
I worked in a café for over 3 years and found the Böhner Mandolin tucked away on an upper shelf. (Owner had purchased the restaurant "as is" from someone else). Loved that thing! Owner tried it once and declared me the only employee qualified to use it. You can seriously lose some fingertips. Just show it the respect it deserves – and possibly order a cutting glove at the same time. Wouldn't waste any money on another brand. Bought mine brand new at a thrift store for $3. They scare people.
Excellent video!
Have and use the Borner for years. Concerned that it may be dulling with age, so was curious to see if there is anything better, and can echo her recommendation. One suggestion: they make a bowl that the Borner feet fit into, and then you can wedge them both and get a solid slice. And most important: never take your eye off your slicing hand!
I'm a chef for 25 years. I do NOT work with these finger slicing horror machines! I work with my hands and the little time extra it takes to cut it with a good chefs knive or a professional slicer machine i'll do it. A cut in my hands can put me out of business for minutes, days or weeks so i choose not to use these. My fellow chefs do handle these bad boys. Ive seen them cut their hands so often i learn everytime from their mistakes to not use these ever again!
I do have the Swissmar. It is practical and safe to use. Blade is still sharp after four years.
Bill Monroe played the mandolin.
I have one very similar to the one she recommended. I bought it at a home exhibition about 35 years ago and it still works as good as when I first got it.,
My aunt has her Börner V-slicer for about 20 years now. Still uses it daily.
I want it for cheese. . Will the winner work?
I have the “winner” but want to upgrade to their newest one that offers more settings than just thick and thin. The thin isn’t thin enough for what I need it to do. I hope the V-Power model would pass ATK’s test and come out on top as well
I have two Borner V-Slicers one for inside our caravan & one for the home, I’ve had them for more than 28 years & bought my son-in-law one 12 years ago & they are still going strong, but I know very soon I’m going to have to replace my orange beauties soon, blades are still as sharp as the day I bought them but the orange casing is becoming brittle 😩😩😩 but I’m just so happy they are still purchasable hallelujah 😍😍😍😍😍
They have a new winner now.
I say this as a person who has over a decade experience in a pro kitchen. When using a slicer of any type, never count on the blade guard to protect your hands. take the time and put on a cut resistant glove. You will never regret having one on and it is an inexpensive bit of PPE. Mistakes happen, your hand will slip eventually. When it does it is far better to have a glove on than not.
Thank you!
2 years on and I’ve just come across this. I have the original version of that recommended Borner but the food holder plastic is degrading and bits just dropping off. I tried the updated version which I sent back for a refund. It was not as well made and when the blades were put into the caddy they were in contact with it. Maybe I had a rogue one but compared to the many years old one I still have – it was rubbish. I'm going to buy a new food holder then carry on. I bought my original off a tv shopping channel and I'd never seen anything like it.
Excellent review. Touched on all the important points. I don't use the one I have due to safety issue (even with a hand-guard) and difficulty changing blades. The search is over now. Thank you!
I've had my Borner since 1980 – just now dull to where I am replacing it! Excellent quality!
Even though it's been awhile since the production of this video, I am happy to have watched it.
I have advancing cataracts in my eyes, and need help in the kitchen as I have cut myself. Not due to dull blades, but to loss of clear eyesight. So this is a lifesaver for my poor fingers.
Next, any luck with Apple corers. Autumn is approaching and it is Apple season. I do a lot of juicing, so I could use a good one.
I think an update might be in order. There are many new ones on the market.
Muchas gracias for sharing. I should've watched this video before I bought my Zyliss.
I would totally love her as my teacher, because I would listen to every word. Thanks for the video on mandolines.
As of August, 2021, the Swissmar Borner V-Slicer is now $52.99 on Amazon. Quite an increase!
How can we sharpen it? Mine is dull now
I saw the V-slicer on night shopping TV ads years ago. Finally caved in and bought it, my mum was very happy with it.
Sold !! Tyvm, I appreciate the complete and concise comparisons. Highly likable staff, and professional reviews.
I enjoy my Pamper Chef Mandoline, thank you very much.
