I always kept parsley in water, like fresh flowers but the water would get nasty after a couple of days. I'll try this method. I'm wondering if, instead of a ZipLoc bag, if I could just reuse the same plastic supermarket vegetable bag I brought it home in, leaving it open of course.
Thanks from 🇫🇷 🫶🏼 😋.
This is a great tip! I've always been hesitant to by fresh herbs because of the quick rotting issue. Thank you.
More. I need more videos on fresh herbs. Many thanks.
i would love to know what fresh herbs can be frozen
I have been using the paper towel and zipped bag method to store cilantro for several years now. After washing the herbs, I use a salad spinner to ensure moistures are totally removed. Contrary to what Jack said that it’s ok to leave the bag open, I let as much air out of the bag before zipping it because air/oxygen speeds up the decay process. With this method, I have leaves lasting for 3 weeks and if my fridge is cold enough, they last for 4 weeks.
One thing I like to do is throw them in a glass with some water and put them on the shelf.
Especially green onions and chives.
I'm not going to add more waste to the planet by using a plastic bag and paper towels just to keep my herbs fresh a little longer, but I'm sure I can come up with a substitute that works similarly.
WHAT is the best way to GROWN your own herbs in an apartment with ZERO outside access? Did you guys ever review those hydroponic kits with the indoor grow lights?
A better method for fresh herbs, treat them like fresh cut flowers. Take all the bands off, re trim the stems and put them into a jar or cup of water and place in the fridge. I’ve had mine last for a couple of weeks using this method and changing the water every few days.
No supermarket, fresh herbs from balcony or garden, just cut before using
Surprisingly not mentioned, the best way to preserve soft herbs like cilantro, parsley .. remove rubber band/wire, triple wash in fresh water, cut off ends, place in glass, 1/3 fill with water, place in fridge .. will easily last for two weeks and provide an easy to use supply of fresh, ready washed, herb flavor for a multitude of dishes ..
Thanks, Jack!
👍
Excellent tip for storing fresh herbs in the refrigerator. I'll use this method from now on. Thanks Jack, always learn something of value when I watch your videos.
Fresh herbs are expensive?
where is the king, basil?
you should add to the title "Western/european herbs only" LMAO
Jack likes to bring his fresh herbs home kiss them and then lovingly wrap them in a blanket to warm them up so he can then make love to them… HA HA HA LOL
love you guys. Thanks for all the knowledge and info you depart on us. Smashing!!!!
Better yet, grow fresh herbs as most of them root easily in water. Basil for example, after you take off the leaves for recipe, just simply put the stem in water instead of throwing it away, it will grow roots in 3 weeks.
So funny….no one ever taught me that method of preserving fresh herbs, I just did that naturally on my own!
Fresh (everything in food) is the only way to go! Organic as well.
Jack … he knows a couple things🗽🇺🇸🫵🙌🎉🥳
I planted an herb garden just outside my back door so I could have fresh herbs all spring, summer, and fall. For winter, I dry or freeze herbs for use.
👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Do a video on how to freeze fresh herbs!
I always learn so much from ATK. Thank you for teaching me how to cook.
Great video!
I'm hooked on fresh herbs🌿 it would have been nice to have a quick recipe using fresh and dried, while discussing usage. Other than that, good post.
Nothing about putting the stems in water and changing each day?
Thanks,
I need a lesson in all the categories of herbs and their uses.
these are things my grandmother taught me and can confirm that they work. if herbs get towards end of life, either dry them or use them for pickling.
"I can't imagine cooking without fresh herbs." Probably one of the whitest, most narcissistic things I have ever heard.
Where does fresh basil fall between the 2 groups…???
I completely agree with one of the other commenters, I greatly appreciate ATK. There's so much pain and incivility in the world nowadays. ATK allows us to turn our attention to lighter, warm, and inspiring topics about the goodness of food and all its complexity.
I stopped buying fresh herbs regularly b/c of how quickly they wilt and turn brown, I needed these tips, thanks ATK!!
What about Basil?
Very helpful tips! Thanks for sharing!
Have always and will always love ATK! I love the approach to cooking trying multiple methods and trial and error much like a scientific hypothesis. Keep this up always.
I don’t know why people don’t grow their own.
Herbs are so easy to grow!
You guys never cease to amaze me. You're always coming up with cool stuff.
