Does anyone else here wake up and just CRAVE fish balls? No one? Ok.
Below you will find a recipe for this dish translated from the original, which you can find at the end of the video. Thank you for watching and take care. 😁
Preparing Salt Fish for Breakfast, The American Frugal Housewife (originally published in 1828, Boston)
Salt Fish. I used Atlantic croaker. Salt cod was also common and is a historically accurate choice
Water + a teaspoon of vinegar for soaking the salt fish
Potatoes, boiled & mashed
Eggs, whisked
Pepper to taste
Rosemary & thyme. The original receipt leaves it up to the cook to choose the seasonings
Lard, for frying
Soak the salt fish overnight in water + a dash of vinegar. Once soaked debone, cut small then mash with a cleaver or large knife. Mix the mashed fish with mashed potatoes, pepper & herbs to taste. Using your hands roll into small balls. Cover in egg. Fry in lard till golden, or about 2-3 minutes. These would taste good sprinkled with lemon juice!
Love your videos I'm obssed with pioneer days❤
It looks very good! Nom nom. I try It.
Thank you for receipt for my family 😆
I don’t eat fish it smells and I’ll starve 🤮
To the administrators of the group…. Someone claiming to be from this group is leaving messages or replies on messages… mine being one of them.
Would that have been the historically accurate proportions? It seems like not much fish for all those potatoes. Looks tasty though. I'll eat almost anything for breakfast. Leftover pizza is very good!
Awful, must serve it up to my mum. It will give her something else to complain about
Flatten them and roll in toasted breadcrumbs then fry, you have fish cakes, a well known food in Scotland.
Do you think dried beef or even salt pork would have also been used?
Best of health ❤
My biggest concern about cooking in this times would be the fire. I feel like I would constantly be burning myself and making a mess. It would be so hard to prep, cook, and serve dinner with no running water. I am clean freak, so the mess would get the best of me. It would be challenge not being wasteful with the water and ingredients.
