Furniture maker meets pit master | Perfect grill table

In this video, I’ll show you how to build a grill table. This grill station can be used with any kamado grill or green egg. I combined sapele and eucalyptus hardwood for some contrast, and both of these woods are perfect for use in outdoor settings as they are very rot-resistant. This grill station is designed with slats to allow water to fall through the top instead of pooling, and it fits in the corner of patios and decks to maximize space. There is also some fun and challenging mortise and tenon joinery in this one. This woodworking project is a great way to get started with your own outdoor kitchen.

  1. Distracted. If I'm doing something repetitive or that I've done 100 times, I can listen to whatever. If I have to focus on details or I'm doing something new, I have to listen to nothing, or to something like instrumental music.

  2. Distracted! I'm newly retired and am getting ready to start woodworking with kitchen cabinets for my rental apartment. (My second floor) I have been watching all kinds of woodworking in order to get allot of different ideas. Not just cabinet making, but everything I can in order to get allot of different joinery ideas. I am an electrician of 45 years so I know that, tools make the tradesman! And tools I have. So, you may hear from me again with a question or 100! Thanks and great channel.

  3. Focused. Totally agree with your take. Audiobooks (or in my case podcasts) require too much thinking for me. But put on my workshop jams playlist, and it gets me in the mood to just keep plugging away at whatever project I'm working on.

What type of hand planes do you use?

  4. Distracted – I've been looking for a project like this! I don't have a big backyard and this corner bbq table would be perfect. I think I would just have to use dominoes though, I'm not sure about those mitered tenons. Those are sick! I feel like we are getting too used to how high quality your projects and videos are but top notch work on both dude!

  5. Focused. I find jazz and classical are my go-to’s when working on complex / new to me techniques. If it’s something I’ve done a few times, I crank the metal. But, I do the same at my day job as a project manager at a software company….

  6. #distracted – Always turning the Radio off, when i need to concentrate.

One question occured to me while watching your video: are you using regular beechwood dominos? The ones you used seemed to be quite light in color.

I always wondered if beechwood dowels would be enough for outdoor furniture since they are encased in other wood and sealed by glue?
Only to always play it safe in the end and invest a bit more money in oak dowels..

  7. Focused and distracted. I've got a combo of bluetooth speakers and over-ear bluetooth headphones, so I like music when I've got all my stuff ready to saw, sand, router, or other tool that goes "Brrrttt." Then the speaker is for layouts, assemblies, etc. However, there are some days where my brain just will not do math, and I've got to shut the music off, wrestle the brain into compliance, and proceed. Then again, no podcasts here as those would definitely distract me, so it's 100% rage metal all the time.
I like your grill stand, dude. I think the subtle leg curves are the chef's kiss – it makes it reminiscent of Arts and Crafts to me, which is my favorite. I agree with the other commenters that an update on the weathering of this would be cool. I'd also like your opinion after some use on that Grizzly drill press!

  8. Focused, music is required or I can’t concentrate. Oh, and loud. Phone is always turned up 100% with my airpods. Now… I’m disappointed you didn’t include video of moving that beast into the backyard, with something that big and awkward I bet it would have been really entertaining.

  9. Focused… But I'm really just kind of a hobbyist so I'm not sure if I really know at this point.😊 I was wondering if I could ask you a question, I've been looking at grizzly table saws and I was wondering if you had an opinion on them?

  10. Focused and distracted – I agree your take on when to listen to which. Would you please post an update in time on the heat from the grill vs. an entirely wooden structure? I’m keen to replicate what you have built, but had in mind to use fire bricks under the grill for fear of too much heat. Thx and looking forward to your ongoing success.
