I have the 600xl and it’s fantastic! Built really well, and the cook/smoke flavor is simply awesome. One of the best purchases I have made. Haven’t used any of my charcoal and wood cookers since I got the Searwood. I guess I will when the power goes out. One thing I didn’t see you do was update the firmware on the Searwood before cooking. Maybe help with temps. 🍻
They made it even harder to use a drip pan.
I bought the Smokefire and was so upset with Weber because of all of the issues. But they took all those lessons and turned them into a heck of a pellet cooker. The temp discrepancy is the only issue, and it is a big one, but other than that I am very happy with the Smokefire.
I have a 600xl and really like it. I follow a few Weber groups and the only negative I hear regularly it the actual temp is about 25-30 less than the display. It’s so consistent that you just set it 25-30 degrees higher. I suspect that the next upgrade will fix it.
Good luck man, had to get rid of my SmokeFire version 2 because it always ran waaaaay too hot. It would say it was at 180 for smoke boost but was always at 275 or higher. Drove me bonkers, looks like they still have the same issue. Got the Traeger Woodridge Pro and it’s so much better. Temp is always right on and it’s 1000 times easier to clean. Very frustrating when the lowest you can get your grill is 275. Also, the SmokeFire went through glow plugs constantly.
The manual mode is what I use for searing, it will go well over 600 degrees.
Although it has a lot going on I like it and have watched a few other vids. it seams well built until you get to the burn pot, and just seams cheap … but Weber has always had a reason for everything
I'm curious how well this works as a grill. I try to be a "right tool for the job" kind of guy, and as a whole i don't think pellet grills should be called grills. That said, I have been rocking a small Pit Boss since I can do some open flame cooking with it. I don't love the design, and I am very careful with greasy foods.
Thanks for the great review, definitely going to pick one up. Can't wait for the cooks. As my old shop teacher used to say… You are a gentleman and a scholar. Take care, Rich
There were some initial issues with assembling the grill — it felt like the screws/bolts didn’t go in properly or align correctly with the threads. Also, the built-in temperature gauge is very inaccurate, fluctuating by at least 10 degrees. The way grease is ''directed'' into the drip tray works fairly well, and overall, cleaning this grill is much easier compared to some others. It seems like lessons were learned from the grease fire issues with the SmokeFire series. This grill also gives a pretty good sear and grill marks on the meats.
Johnny's video on the View to a Grill channel about the "self-cleaning mode" on the Searwood 600 was also interesting, as the idea of burning off grease and other residue sounded like a great concept. I haven’t tested it myself yet, but I definitely plan to give it a try. I’m not sure how the grill will perform in the cold winter temperatures here in Finland, but that remains to be seen. The Weber app that works with your phone functions well, though.
Here in Finland, this costs around 1200euros.
That said, it’s an excellent grill overall, and I’ve really enjoyed using it. I can definitely recommend it 😊
As always, great video, Tom!💪
I got the Gen2 Greasefire. Fortunately I never had a ragiing inferno while using it, but connectivity issues seemed persistent, and firmware updates were painful. I took it all as a sign that pellet grills weren't for me. This Searwood does maintain some of the aesthetics that I liked about the Smokefire. Maybe I'll consider this if I ever want to dip my toe in pellet grill waters ever again. Nice review!
I'm in my fifth summer with my SmokeFire and this is what I plan to upgrade to some day. I do notice the SF always overshoots when starting but settles in after about 20 or so minutes. Think it has something to do with their app. Nice review Tom!
I can’t comment on the reply back to you YouTube auto deletes it lol. Google Weber crafted system. It’s a frame kit then you add weber accessories. Sear grates, griddle, pizza stone. Vegetable tray.
When i bought mine back in march, I only got 1 probe with the grill. How disappointing
I'd be curious to see what the millivolt reading is at the temp sensor terminals. This way you would know if the display is reading accurately.
It seems that the grease mixing with the ash will be a hassle to clean. For example in the ReqTeq you don't really need to clear the ash out of the barrel and it just adds to the insulation. Good video review. Thanks!
Thanks for the review. I think you're right on the SmokeBoost. I have a Gen2 Smokefire and in the manual it says Smokeboost is 165-200 depending on ambient conditions. I'm very happy with the Gen2 Smokefire which I believe is very similar. They dumped the name because of the bad rep from the original Smokefire.
So I’m looking at the Excel version of this I came recteq Xfire like you. I don’t like that. The ash just drops in the bottom that means I gotta vacuum it out every single time I cook pretty much. I don’t like no cast-iron either. I’m wondering if this is gonna see her so I’m interested in seeing how you compare the both of them. I really Xfire would fix their problem with the igniters. I saw another YouTube guy that had the same problem. He said after his fourth cook, he can’t get them to work so it’s a running problem. Otherwise I would go buy another one of those today. I do more grilling than I do smoking, but I like having the option I came from propane. This is my first pellet and I left a bad taste in my mouth so I’m hoping this one would be better. Let me know how you compare the both of them and if you think this would be good for grilling or if it’s basically just a pellet for smoking and stay away from it.
Great Video Tom! Do you have any plans on doing the Weber Smoque?
Like any other Weber, they are over priced because of the name.
