Yes check them out. I bit a rock the first time I cook Lentils. This will mess your teeth up. And if not it will hurt like hell. especially the store brands.
I have found many stones in my lentils over the years. I've also gone to a restaurant and my dad found a stone in his lentils! Def check for stones.

You're not actually looking for stones; you're looking for tiny thermonuclear devices. They just don't want to alarm anyone. You can never be too careful.
Lentillians should know that cooked chana dal is like chick peas and can be used for hummus.
I have a different way of checking for pebbles that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere so I just wanted to mention it here in case it can help someone. Basically I take handfuls of lentils {or any dried legume} and drop them slowly either on a sheet tray or pot lid and listen to the sound. Rocks are a lot harder than lentils and make a very different sound. Then I quickly scan to make sure I didn't miss anything, dump them into the pot or container then continue on.
If you have a good hard lid or tray you can also hear the difference between dirt clods or little twigs or just bad lentils/beans as well. It's quick and easy and acts as a double check too.
You check dried ALL legumes the same way. Pour a small amount into your hand and check each bean. Literally 15minutes….just do it
I search for little bits in my calrose rice. In 52 years I have found 4 extremely small pebbles. They're black and stand out against the rice.
No shortcuts. You just have to do it by hand.

At a high-end vegan restaurant I had the "primitive grains" bowl, with lentils. Someone didn't check them evidently, as I bit down hard on a stone, cracked a molar, and required a root canal. Check them, please!

Looking especially handsome here. So, lentils… yum, but you have to clean them, ugh. I've never made them and I'm positive if I did nobody but me would eat 'em. So, now I'm craving lentils.
We need a video where Dan makes Joe eat a bowl of lentils with rocks in it so we can see what happens. Yeah science!
