  1. My Grandmother was from Missouri and was born in 1895. She taught me how to bake when I was about 8 or 9. I’m 79 years old now and still use her recipes. She always used lard for her pastry dough. I remember the red lard cans. I don’t use lard now, I use 2/3 shortening and 1/3 unsalted butter for my crusts. They are so tender and flaky. Another thing she taught me was that instead of corn starch or flour as a fruit pie thickener she used minute tapioca. That’s what I’ve always used. I like because it is flavorless and is really pretty. Just curious if you’ve ever tried tapioca in your fruit pies. I love your shows. I just bought your 2001-2022 complete show cookbook. Love it!

  2. Julia and Bridget thank you so much for the wonderful desserts. Growing up my mom would make straight rhubarb pie, other pies also but I remember she always used tapioca. Do you have any recipes highlighting the use of tapioca instead of cornstarch or flour? Please share them. I love ATK.

  5. Pear crisp is first on my list. Good to learn about corn starch firming up the liquid. That will help my apple pie too. And I noticed bag of B pears from instacart.
Disappointed to hear how juicy plums turn out when cooked. DH asked me to figure out how to make my version of stuffed with figs pie with a plum mixture. Has to be dry to work with the crust.
