In Kansas City there are so many hole in the wall places that are better then the 4 you went to you could spend a week just trying bbq
Where is the best of the best PorkJerky ?
I don't know about that Ted Lasso fella, but I travel the western part of Missouri for work. Here's some places that I keep going back to:
Q39 (KC) – for hifalutin folks but the burnt ends poutine makes me want to annex Canada.
Como Smoke & Fire (Como) – gas station one, the burnt ends can be hit or miss but when they hit, they are amazing.
City Butcher & Barbecue (Springfield) – burnt ends gave me a grease stain on my shirt and I left it there on purpose.
Hog Tide (Aurora) – it's in the middle of nowhere but worth the trip.
I also like the pulled pork at Bates City BBQ, just off I-70.
Just FYI, if your ribs or brisket have sauce on it they are hiding the flavor of the meat, plain and simple
Someone needs to open a Texas BBQ restaurant in KC. This food should be illegal to be classified as BBQ.
It looks like you came to KC and didn't eat at any of our best BBQ spots. Hats off for hitting the traditional joints in Gates & Bryants, but if you left town without trying Harp or Chef J you didn't have KC Craft BBQ.
Not gonna lie, kind of a poor showing and review format. Texas isn't that far from KC, would a two day trip and four full meals of been that hard? I would of skipped Arthurs and Gates on health inspections alone, both places are always dead for a reason. Replace those with Q39 and Slaps, then do lunch and dinner for two days at all 4 places. When I go try a new BBQ joint I order every piece of meat on the menu and every side to split with my group of friends. If you did that I think you would get better results. Anthony Bourdain would rolling in his grave watching you eat a 1/4 Z-Man at one of the the worlds best BBQ institutions.
joes is way over rated..dry pulled pork salty burnt ends..yuk
That looked like a patriot pitt
all that sauce and vinigar is the reason i picked Texas to take my vacation at to taste "Real" barbecue. due to getting heartburn from all the sauces out there i prefer tasting the meat.
unfortunately the BBQ joints in this post are old school and not necessary the best BBQ in town any longer. Next time try SLAPS or Scotts Kitchen.
The problem with BBQ is the one you like the best nothing compares. When I travel I try to find the best in the region. Every region is different and is excellent for different reasons. Texas is brisket. St. Louis KC Memphis is ribs. Carolinas is pulled pork. Can’t forget burnt ends in The middle. Different areas use different sauces some sweet some spicy. Some would smack you for using sauce. None are wrong or right. The one thing I find true is the best BBQ is done at my house. Just saying. That’s because I do what I like. But either way it never is as good when I buy it.
In KC I have only had Slaps.
I'm in the middle of my first 1000 gallon build. Having trouble sourcing a 10 inch stack without breaking the bank, but have access to 12 inch pipe. Has anyone used or know of anyone that has used a 12 inch stack with success?
Hi Jeremy,
I was wondering/hoping you may do a video on air speed inside the cook chambers or a standard flow Vs reverse flow. A lot of people seem to think the bark is much better on standard flow units because of the air speed. I would love to know if it is quicker, by how much? I'm not sure if there is a tool to measure this but thought I would put it out to the mad scientist of BBQ himself 🙂
There are over 100 BBQ restaurants in KC. Only tourist noobs and suburbanites go to the places you went to. Ted Lasso is a clown show.
As a KC resident I’d say 3 of the places you went are lackluster at best. Joes has been fantastic every time Ive been. I think maybe they’ve all gotten accustomed to the super smoky, super barley, texas style. There’s more than one way to do it.
In my opinion each of these places has some things that they do exceptionally well…. I feel likenyou missed out on some of them… Bryant's Brisket. Crown Prime ribs at Jackstack… for example. You also have a Texas bias, which is a different kind of food.
Next time you're in central Texas, you should tag me. For one, there are a ton of "in the sticks" BBQ joints you could check. But I'd love for you to test my custom reverse-flow (made in Chile) smoker!
I am not really sure what the goal of these reviews are, unless it is to continually trash the mom and pops all over this country as compared to the perfect barb you create. These folks have their livelihood's on the line for these reviews, and you trash them one after another, in a rather elitist and snobby way. I thought this channel was worth watching early on, and that you had my back as a new person in barbecue, but these reviews are pushing me to find a new channel. #1 rule for a Y tube channel person…don't be a D**k.
Are you going to the World Championship BBQ contest in Memphis this week?
You only had time to go to the touristy places? If you are going to try to mimic Guy Freri do some research. If I had friend's come from out of town I would NEVER take them to any
of those places. Woodyard, Slaps, LC's, Big T's, Q-39, B B's Lawnside. All much better. Who does not order the sauce on the side when doing a taste test? Dry rub only. If there is no smoke it's not BBQ. Kansas City has REAL BBQ but you never saw any of it. Very Sad. Next time just stop and get a McRib!
I grew up in K.C. To this day I cannot get enough Gates BBQ.
KC BBQ is different than Texas BBQ, also if they're not hitting it right at the first or second run of the food it's not going to be nearly as good.. I know a KC BBQ'er and it's all hot and fast, 300 degrees. Also said you gotta hit them right when the run comes out, not 4 hours later when it's been sitting under a heat lamp. And it's great BBQ but it's not barky texas BBQ. That's what great about BBQ, you make it what you want. Lastly, you missed the best, Q39.
Too bad you hit Gates and Arthur Bryants after the rush. I havent been there in a couple decades but that was an embarrassment.
You can see the disappointment in their faces looks horribble tbh
