Wife tried it. First few deliveries were good. Then every subsequent delivery was missing a few ingredients and they would randomly substitute something like celery for green peppers or carrots for squash etc
She'd complain and theyd give her a $5 credit but the recipes were impossible to make when they dont supply the right ingredients.
Hey, heads up. Just saw there's a recall on C* air fryers. Sorry, can't recall the name but I remember you have one. Look into it before you blow up your kitchen, please?
Do you have a wok you recommend? Or do you prefer just cast iron?
Great recipes but small portions for anyone who works manual labor
I used HelloFresh for a few months when I was getting used to cooking for myself at home and had a busy work schedule. It helped me come up with future meal ideas and kept me from eating a bunch of fast food. It's too expensive for me to do in the long term, but it helped me get a good foundation on what I liked to cook. I also love how they managed to time the recipes so everything gets done around the same time.
For me, the reason I started to use Hello Fresh was because I realized I often ended up with excess food I had to throw away because I didn't use it up fast enough. So while I think the observation that Hello Fresh is probably a tad more expensive than if you buy the groceries yourself, the fact I don't need to throw away as much food as I would do when I cooked everything myself. Also, I would often feel I needed to buy more groceries to fill in a gap in a dish I wanted to cook just to use up the excess and then something else would go to waste.
Yeah, I used Hello Fresh for about a year and it was a good source of inspiration and introduced me to some new flavors and techniques. After a while, I stopped ordering boxes and just used what I learned to grocery shop more effectively.
It's weird hearing couscous being a Brazilian northeasterner, cuzcuz is traditional corn almost like flour we eat with salted Meat in breakfast
I gave up cooking like this in the 1990s. For one person too hard to use the supporting spices and stock items up. So cooking became simple, plain.
I liked Hello Fresh but the delivery service (FedEx) delivered late. By the time it arrived about 7:00pm the ice was melted and some of the vegetables and meat were inedible. HF gave me credits and probably tried to work with their carrier but this happened 4 times in a row. I know from the tracking data the the box was on the truck at 5:00am, I was the last delivery I think. I had to discontinue. One of the nice things is that you can find the details for the spice blends. I still make the Southwest blend myself.
That is a lot of single use plastic for all the small ingredients.
It's an absolute scam. They charge you for their cheap recipes more than the ingredients. I did a similar experiment where I got "Bulgogi Meatballs" which entailed drizzling their sauce over ground beef you oven baked with over priced jasmine rice. Though, I did get a good laugh at their excuse of "Bulgogi" sauce as a Korean American. There are tons of free youtube videos that teach you to cook better than the "service" they offer.
He's looking at Hello Fresh but talks about Blue apron?
My dad has a brain injury and has a hard time driving and going into public. My stepmom still works. They get Hello fresh so my dad can do the cooking while avoiding going to the grocery store. He says he hates it because he uses every dish in the kitchen to make the meals 😂 ❤ The truth is though that it has been really beneficial for him to do it! My stepmother loves it of course. My dad is doing really well though since they started with hello fresh. No more incidents in public and car accidents as well as keeping him independent while helping my stepmother. Too many dishes is worth it imo!
As someone trying to slim down, I think hello fresh and other meal boxes would work wonders for me. When I try to cook, I either make it too bland or make too much. Having something that already been measured out for 1 person would be great.
Small detail that can probably be overlooked.
Noodles are generally Chinese and Pasta is generally Italian. Sometimes it gets intertwined but is differentiated with "Italian Noodles" or "Chinese Pasta". But to call Spaghetti "noodles" is inaccurate.
That is not couscous
I have ordered HelloFresh a number of times. Especially for inspiration in cooking more meatless meals. I really love the ideas as well as introducing ingredients I've not used before. Additionally they are packaged way more sustainably than grocery store hauls.
Mealime is a good compromise. It’s a free app with a premium side to it with more recipes there, but you can have it create a meal plan for you or you build the meal plan yourself, it gives you a shopping list and even will let you order through their app (it pulls up basically a browser at whatever site you want to use and is like “right now you’re looking for white onions” and it might even type that into the search bar for you depending on which site you’re on). Then when it comes time to cook it walks you through step by step what needs to be done and you can print the recipe out. All for free. Enjoy.
Hello fresh has been a bit hit and miss for me in the past at least in Australia. More than once had boxes come with missing ingredients or ingredients that just were very poor quality. The other thing I don't like is the amount of waste the boxes created (all the packaging and ice packs).
I will say though it did teach me to cook better and develop some good knife skills.
Thank you for this insightful video! I tried HelloFresh/ChefsPlate in the past and what I found is that while the portioned ingredients are super useful, I also really disliked how much waste was created from all the packaging. So I ended my subscription after a few weeks and just kept my favourite recipes from them and make them with groceries I buy myself. It turns out that due to how stuff is portioned from the grocery stores is that I often end up with more food at the end than what is indicated in the recipe cards and I can stretch those out for 2-3 days' worth of meals. The biggest pro for HelloFresh would be not having a whole bottle of soy sauce or pack of seasoning left after using it for one (or a few) dish, and the biggest con for me personally is all the packaging waste.
