I replaced 50% of the pellets in my Pellet Smoker with wood chips (linked below) and reversed seared a whole Argentine picanha from These pellets were sized for use with the LSG, and I am not suggesting that they should be used with any other pellet grill. But, I can say that the result was amazing and added a much better smoky flavor than pellets alone! Lone Star Grillz is making the perfect size chips available to work with the auger. There is no guarantee that this technique will work with all pellet grills, but it sure works with LSG!

Tried 50/50 with my camp chef and it got stuck. The cups are too thin and got wedged in the tube and auger. Darn.

I haven't tried this method in mine but I have a Woodwind Pro 36, which burns chunks as an option over the fire pot. Myself and others who've had my smoked meats before and after all notice a significant difference in smoke flavor from before and after the swap (previously had a Traeger 780 Pro). I have a friend with a Traeger and hoping he might chance giving this a try to see if he can get a similar elevation in smoke flavor with this approach.

Thanks for this Greg. Hopefully I just saved 900 bucks on a Masterbuilt gravity series. I’m going to try a small mixture for my woodwind pellet grill. I’ll probably work my way up to 50-50 once I see that they flow through the auger. Take care, fellow, SD’er,mac.
Hope was the smoke flavor? You need to do a comparison using this method and one without.
Do the math guy's. These wood chips are expensive. It will add up later on and especially if you smoke a lot. Just save up and buy an offset smoker or a gravity fed charcoal/wood smoker.
The color looked great for a pellet smoker. I will have to look at my auger. I would feel like the fire would back up in the auger and start fire.
Why are you slicing it with the grain?
Cut against the grain next time. Otherwise not too shabby
You use the word quality in this video instead of quantity of smoke, if you use a quality pellet you can get a good low to medium smoke flavor without as many PAHs that the dry burning would creates. If you need that intense smoke flavor this might be a good compromise to a stick burner

Wood pellets are usually made with sawdust and glue agent, very toxic
I got a bunch of cherry wood was thinking about mixing pellets with chain saw dust. Will try it out when I'm ready to buy a new pellet grill or find a used one I can. Don't want to be with out a pellet grill so easy to set and forget with the phone app. Great video
There is a difference, pellet smokers are super easy but the flavor is with natural wood.

What was the final verdict? Also, would this be ok to do this in a center firebox campchef?
The reason pellets are used is because they are uniform and won't jam up the augur tube in the middle of a cook.
Do you still get the nice blue smoke? I had a yoder pellet but sold it because of flavor. Now i use Yoder 48 flattop. Love it . Took some getting used to trustworthiness wise because the stack is in the middle but its great cooking right to left. Ill be honest though. I miss that pellet cooker alot it was amazing for convenience. Could go to bed and monitor. Can i trust wood chips that way? AWESOME AWESOME Awesome cook. How much fuel did you have left? Total cook time? Ide like to see a brisket cook with the mix.
If you make another wood chip pellet grill video, I'd like to see what the burn pot looks like after the cook. And we didn't see how the chips burned up in the burn pot.

I think the design of this cooker is perfect for those chips. I’ve used them in my LSG also now and they really make a difference. The hopper and auger design are perfect and it fed with zero issues.

I find this to be bs. Let me explain why the pellets are compressed saw dust of the wood they are from. Hardwood that is used in a smoker is the wood itself. None of it is processed because it's wood. Pellet grills will never beat an offset smoker with hardwood in it. You can use all those fancy timers and do dahs. The best pit masters use instinct and the right tools. Plus one the flavor you don't get with pellets is the flavor of the fire. Yes fire does add flavor to meat and food. If done right it can make the difference between a good burger and the best.
Was the amount of ash/residue left over different than just with pellets? This is a very interesting idea!
One thing to keep in mind is that most wood pellets are a blend of 40-60% oak, which in my opinion waters down the flavor profile. Fortunately however if you look around you can find 100% hickory, cherry, apple and mesquite pellets for a slight premium (but still cheaper than whole wood chunks/chips).
