Is Kingsford Overrated? My First Impressions of B&B Charcoal (From the Deck Ep. 4)

The Kingsford Blue Bag has been the standard for backyard grilling for decades. But is it still the best option, or are we just holding onto nostalgia? In this episode of From the Deck, I share my first impressions after trying B&B Charcoal briquettes for the first time… from lighting time to ash production, heat retention, and overall performance.

I’ve cooked through hundreds of bags of Kingsford over the years, so I know what to expect from it. The question is: can B&B match that consistency or even beat it?

What do you think? Are you sticking with Kingsford, or have you switched to another charcoal brand? Drop your thoughts in the comments, because this is a discussion worth having.

  2. I didn’t grow up with much bbq☹️, so I don’t really have a nostalgic attachment. I want my lump charcoal to be made from pure hardwood and the only other ingredient should just be a starch binder. I tend to use Weber briquettes and Leaf briquettes for that reason! Leaf is a Canadian charcoal maker located in Quebec, their briquettes are mostly Maple and birch. I understand Weber are pure too!

  3. I wouldn't use kingsford. Theyre owned by clorox and have borax, toxic soft wood binder among others like limestone dust. A guy made a video about it. The better burning charcoal briqs used to be just oak not hickory as well on the label. So not sure if they changed the recipe. Kingsford is dirty as hell to me. I like fogo or better burning lump.

  4. I use to use Kingsford, but when I got home from the hospital in 2023 and I thought about getting into the smoke game, tried alot of fuel, but B&B had been consistent and burned hotter and longer than Kingsford, gave my mom the bags and Kingsford that was sitting around.

  5. I've tried a multi too a charcoal from B&B to Cowboy tune the ones I grew up with as a 15-year-old when I started barbecuing myself on the grill back at home at my parents house Kingsford original or the Kingsford match like. Honestly with me it's a Nostalgia thing as well as a price point of I know exactly what I'm getting out of the Kings for the original or just kingsford. I know what I'm getting from it I don't purchase the match light anymore because I now have a chimney so I've been using a chimney for the past 5 years but I've been grilling for over 20 years not anything special I just really started getting into the special things like brisket smoking a brisket and really taking the time to do ribs I did things like burgers chicken hot dogs hot links you know the simple thing that don't take but 15 minutes to cook 20 minutes. I've also tried the bigger wood charcoal pieces that aren't brickettes and those I would say are the hardest to heat all because they're different sizes they're just wood chunk pieces but one thing is one thing I love the Kingsford

  6. Hi Keith! Love your tips. I’m a Kingsford user; I agree with you; nostalgia and family tradition. I have never tried B&B, but if I find a bag, I’ll try it and give you my honest opinion. Thanks for your advice.
