Roath Khabar, a traditional custom, involves sending roath to people’s homes to announce good news, such as a birthday or the arrival of a new bride. The bride herself carries a basket full of roath to her new home to share the happiness of her marriage with the neighbors.

Similarly, Kashmiri Pandits have a special affinity for this bread and make it on Ganesh Chaturthi.

The recipe is typically made by local kandurs, the local bakers of Kashmir, who traditionally cook it in a tandoor.

However, I’ve adapted the recipe to be baked in a regular oven, so you can enjoy this special treat at home.

For those looking for a crispy version, there is also a smaller, deep-fried version dotted with dry fruits.
