I've had my 545 since shortly after they were released. I actually like it way more than I thought I would. I've had both the masterbuilt and char griller gravity Feds as well.
This smoker/grill is the most solid consistent temp holding unit I've ever had, slow and low for 10+ hours or hot and fast for minutes it holds temps solid.
The size works well for our family of 3 and when we occasionally have guests.
The ash catcher was definitely over looked and one of my main gripes. The charcoal I've just got it down to know how many chunks I'll need for a cook.
The autoignite, it's gimmicky, I don't use it I just start the fire starter with a lighter.
The app is great.
All and all I don't miss the problematic char griller 980 I sold after buying this, don't miss the Masterbuilt gravity fed either.
When feeding large parties, which is only maybe once or twice a year, I use my good old trusty reverse flow or this and my Weber Genesis
Great review but how many briquets are used for a typical cook. I always shut my Weber down and save the coals for reuse.
Great 8 week review. James @smokingdadbbq has run an all wood fire in his and according to him it has produced stick burner flavors. Downside was he had to tend to it like an offset also. Thanks Tom
Thnx great review. I still have 2 questions: What are the exact measurements of the grill (cooking) surface, and is it possible to use a rotisserie?
Great review, Tom! Always honest. I like the grill, but the same concerns, as you mentioned, also . Definitely if the price would drop some. Cheers 🍺
Great summary review Tom. I was thinking I could live with the drawbacks until you pointed out the grill gate real estate. It's right in front of us when you do the videos, but it never seemed to compute in the past. All they really did is moved the charcoal hopper inside on this model and took up valuable grilling space. The cast iron griddle lid is nice, but you've shown how you can simply use an aftermarket griddle.
Thanks Tom! As an owner of the 1050, I appreciate the videos of the new MBGS model. Do you have any plans on getting the MB XT?
Nice review, thx Tom😃
I had an idea for the ash can modification. Cut a hole (2-3" in diameter) and make a cover for that hole that pivots open using a bolt. With that you could open the hole to empty most of the ash with actually pulling out the ash can. This could also be done if needed during a cook if necessary using a second small metal catch can. Anyway, great video Tom!
You should try to get a Broil king regal there. This year's model looks fabulous
Great review Tom.
Masterbuilt needs to stop overthinking changes. $500 for that is a joke. They should focus down on what works like the gravity models and simply improve the build quality/features.
Thanks Tom. I think I'll wait on the Autoignite 545 and get the gravity model.
