Damn… last one is literally the most sold crab in Spain 🇪🇦, Sea OX (Buey de Mar), its sold everywhere every single super market in Spain, the claws are really popular, and you can make an egg salad with the insides of the head, the legs are also tasty 😋
I love snow crabs but I agree. Sometimes when I get them they are the sweetest best thing ever! Sometimes they are dry and not worth it. And others they are slimy and bitter…
Do you think that snow crab would be better for something like crab dip or potstickers etc. recipes where other ingredients would be bringing the moisture?
Honestly consistency and effort are the issues with all crabs. 30 years ago when they were the cheapest things at the supermarket it was fine but now that they are premium is just never worth it.
Let me save you some time. I've tried every edible variety of crab you can name, pretty much everything but coconut crabs. Chesapeak Bay Blue Crab is the best crab in the world. You're welcome.
I rescued a few soft shell crabs from a sushi restaurant. They were the last three in the jar and it was almost closing time. I was high af. Brought them home, I had an old fishbowl and one of those zen garden things. I took the rocks from the zen garden, put them in the fishbowl, and submerged the rocks halfway with water. I'll never forget the incredible relief and joy I felt from those crabs when they were placed in their new home. They were making little bubbles, moving the rocks around.. it was so cute. The next day, one of them escaped and my brother, who had no idea what I'd done, found it crawling down the hallways and trapped with a jar. I ended up feeding them seaweed from the natural foods store. One of them lived for 6 months!!!
Gotta give the sawagani another try some time! Search サワガニレシピ to find recipes in Japanese and let your browser translate. I promise they have a lot of potential!
Uneducated eater. Your crab literally depends on your supplier Intel quality the delivery process was. To say a breed of crab taste different from each crab you eat means you definitely need to find a new place to buy your food

Hear me out. Brown crab is good with south eastern asian flavors like vietnamese nouc mam, or Cambodian "crack" sauce and some lettuce.

I think the problem you have with small Japanese crabs is that they are meant to be crunchy, whereas as you enjoy soft and flavorful.
The Japanese crabs work well as “snack crackers” , like using old bay or something similar on them.
My least favorite crabs were the ones i caught in Vegas 2005
