One Day DIY Smoker Build And Cook | Ugly Drum Smoker |

In this video we turn a 55 gallon food grade barrel into an awesome smoker. We completed this build in one day and managed to cook on it as well. This build was a lot of fun and tested our speed when it comes to diy projects. Hope you enjoy and remember to GET OUT AND BUILD!!

  1. I love fabrication, and I recycle EVERYTHING. I likely make a new tool almost daily, so I'm behind this project.
However, I would strongly recommend a good twisted strand wire-wheel or flap disk to remove the paint instead, clear down to bare metal <— while wearing a full respirator face-shield. (Or use paint stripper in a well ventilated area)
Because paint, and especially industrial powder coatings, are toxic AF. Even "food safe" ones, because that rating is only meant for its normal application (under normal use) factory cured/dried state.
Burning 🔥 out the barrel, even at very very high temperatures, would most likely leave toxic soot and residues behind that would be smoked into every meal to come, even after years of regular near-daily use. Many common toxic chemicals are measured in the parts per million or even billion. Imagine how just one drop of concentrated dye can change the color of an entire 5 gallon bucket of paint. Just a little toxic can go a looooong way.
Know that burning is just rapid oxidization, E.G., it's just another chemical reaction. Different additives in paints will react differently to heat, and heat can even free up harmful chemicals from their previously "food-safe" bonded (chemically stable) states.

  2. I would suggest being very careful where the drum comes from (I would also recommend only single use drums, so you know for sure what was kept in there). IF you can't, and you really want to go ahead, remember to wear full PPE and open air to clean it out. I would suggest stripping the metal itself a bit whether through grinding or what not AFTER cleaning it out with soap and water extremely well and scrubbing it (because, before, there could be something in there that has a low flash point and will ignite). You need to absolutely make sure there are no hazardous materials, and that's a hard thing to do.

  3. What about that lining on the inside? A long burnout of the inner lining wont work as it contains a powered coating so the only way to remove that lining is to scrub it out after the initial burn until you get bare metal. Then coat it with any food oil and burn it again to create a protective layer on the bare metal.
