Back when I was a kid, and our parents didn’t have time to make a meal, we’d get to enjoy something called a TV dinner. They weren’t that good, but we didn’t care, since we got to set up our specially designed trays, and eat in front of the screen. One of the most popular TV dinner entrees of that era was the Salisbury steak, and this is my not-too-modern take on that classic dish. Enjoy!

I make my gravy with a little bit of red wine AFTER the mushrooms and onions are dry.
My partner doesn't like whole/sliced mushrooms. Could I puree the sauce before adding it back into the pan without it changing the dish?
I making mine in the shape of xmas trees tonight. Happy Holidays 🎄
Best Salisbury steak recipe ever!
Chef John, I have a great idea for you. At least I think it is. 🤔

Now why do I know that you dust the patties in corn starch which not only chars the burger, but also helps thicken the gravy in a one-pan method?
I tried this recipe and eventually used it with a group of friends. They knew I lived in the UK while at university but, since they all knew about Salisbury Steak via the Fallout games, I decided to change the name to "Cornish dinner steaks" (I was in Somerset, which I told them was somewhat close to Cornwall – thought it would lend some credibility). Not one of them said that is was a "cheap ground beef" dish, and instead complimented me on picking up "posh, aristocratic cooking, old boy!" They're not what I'd call the most selective of eaters, but I've been too embarrassed to tell them the truth. So congrats, Food Wishes: the recipe is great!
we made this. it's nothing like the 70's TV dinners. It was a million times better.
So delicious I decided to x4 this recipe, made a huge batch of mashed potatoes and got some frozen corn.. and then I made 16 actual TV dinners!.. froze them and now I can reminisce the old days and have a good quality Salisbury steak. Microwave the frozen dinners for 3 min plus 3 min, resting a bit between. What a treat, and now I don't have to cook every night.. they are waiting for me in the freezer.
This gravy is to die for.
Triangular, if you’re really weird…. 👽 lol….. I love your humor to cooking… You crack me up….

I made this for first time and it was literally one of the best meals of my life. Thank you!
Great recipes but damn his voice/cadence is annoying. Sounds like one of those follow-the-dot things.
Love it
whoa, must be old old
My catholic grade school hot lunch featured this without the veggie side, I guess Chef would be okay with that. But the various brands of TV dinners were (are?) in sectioned trays to try to keep each item and its frozen gravy juice from co-mingling during transport and heating up. The home versions usually included a small mass of sweet dessert, say apple pie. One time the apple pie section had leaked into that of the salisbury steak. At first I was annoyed, but my parents weren't going to heat another one and the TV show already started — so I dug in… thus creating my first enjoyable gourmet moment! Guess that was just me cooking. Decades later here I am now about to grate a spare granny smith apple to add to the mixture
I made this recipe tonight. It was great
Some dijon mustard in both the patties and gravy takes it to a new level
anyone start drooling during gravy preparation?
