I can't believe all the comments like "oh it's so hard to make !". Very unfair !
This is a really nice trick, thank you so much, gonna use it right now !
Thank you 🙏 very good idea 😊
Wow I just can't believe this video is by ATK, I am so disappointed! This makes me rethink all your advice.
This other dude did it with a bit of aluminum foil and a plate. I suggest watching that video.
💯😂Great for a family of 2 or 3. It cooks quinoa, white, jasmine MyBest.Kitchen and brown rice really well. 💤Easy to clean and store because of the size. We haven't used the steamer part of it yet.
You say a single use item, I say reusable. Why have a piece of trash when you can have an item that will hold up for a long time ( that you didn’t have to create). I even take mine camping. So you can stick with the trash if you really want to. I really thought the American Test Kitchen was better then that 🥵

Wow. ATK, you guys are usually spot on but this idea is a colossal fail. First, you assume that one has all the tools necessary for your "impromptu steamer" (I do but would never in a million years use them for this). Second, it isn't saving money if every time you wish to steam you have to buy the pie tins. If you save the pie tins after using them they take up just as much space as a collapsible steamer. Third, if steaming something such as large amounts of cauliflower, which I often do, how do you propose we safely remove the basket without a handle to do so?
I have been searching for the perfect steamer that had a handle that was safe and secure to remove when hot, had legs that wouldn't pop off and would not rust. Thought I would find a great recommendation from ATK as is usually the case when I am searching for reviews when considering which kitchen tool I should purchase. Very disappointed! I'll have to find recommendations elsewhere this time!
Thanku for that easy idea ❤❤❤
Thank you!
So funny this showed up today, my steamer fell apart yesterday after I dropped it so I just took a piece of a.foil and made a bowl big enough for my broccoli, folded the ends over the pan, poked some holes, put a coffee filter & covered. It was quick and worked great. I had that cheep steamer for almost 10 years, I'll definitely spend $5. for a new one, they don't take up any extra room, I just store it inside a pan. I'de eat raw, boil, roast or sauté my veggies before wasting 2 pie pans like that. Sorry but this is definitely not worth watching or doing!
Use your espresso machine's steam outlet.
Use the top of your terrible drip coffee machine. Put the veggies in the bit you put the coffee in. Throw the entire thing away after you use it, and buy a decent coffee machine.
Use your single use rice cooker. It's also a steamer.
Use your single use sieve in a lidded pot.
Use your single use colander. just hang it into a lidded pot with some simmering water in it.
Put some junk (a coffee mug, three stupid ceramic ornaments… whatever) in the bottom of a pot with a half inch of water. put a bowl on top of that. Bring to a simmer. Stick food in bowl. wait. eat. If the steam doesn't get to your food because there are no holes in your plate (it will) it also wont get to your food through the parchment paper.
How about making "200 Super Quick Video Tips" about how insanely useful a $5 steamer is.
AAgggghhh!
Next week: How to make in impromptu Dutch Oven
A single small steamer basket that folds up OR 17 items, 10 minutes, a process committed to memory, and a whole lot of trash. Terrible idea.
So now I need a rolling pin/dutch oven/pie pan/parchment paper. Got it.
Yeah reinvesting the wheel. 👎🏾 sending more stuff to the dumps. I’ll keep my reusable steamer. We have veggies with all our meals so we use ours daily.
OK, so if I don't have a steamer basket, all I need are two aluminum pie plates, a wire rack, a large Dutch oven, a rolling pin, a bamboo skewer, cooking spray, and some parchment paper. So easy lol
Ridiculous to use disposable aluminum to do this. If you do it multiple times, it will cost more than a steamer basket. And even if you don't, those collapsible steamer baskets are cheap. Aluminum has an enourmous carbon footprint in mining and producing it, and then manufacturing the product. A colander works well for many steaming jobs. ATK needs to get its green on!
Great idea Thank you
This is ridiculous, it’s better to use the actual small steamer cause at least it will last much longer than two aluminum pie plates which takes even more space. Plus if you’re looking to go eco-friendly, disposable pie plates are bad for the environment AND your wallet.
This is really stupid. If you don''t want to spend a few bucks on the steamer shown at the beginning of the video, just buy a cooling rack or the Nuwave oven rack and use that instead. So wasteful with the pie plates.
Trying to make a fool of the watchers.
It's still single use. At least with a steaming basket you can use it multiple times.
a good idea but probably should not have proposed it as a steamer basket replacement. should have made it a kitchen tips and tricks video instead.
RID-iculous! While I get why this was even considered WORTHY of ATK I still think it's an epic FAIL! A steamer basket takes up much less space than two disposable pie plates and a roll of parchment. (And … seriously … if you don't already have a steamer basket it's HIGHLY unlikely you're going to have TWO pie plates AND parchment!) Glad Apollo 13 didn't rely on THIS fix. Why not strongly recommend the purchase of a steamer basket, or recommend the use of baskets that come with most pots/pans sets or a collander? Even more importantly, why not go to someone's ACTUAL kitchen and see what they have. Everyone has aluminum foil and you could probably do this just as well with that and an inverted plate. Better yet, take the rack out of your toaster over and place it over a shallow 10" skillet, then cover it. Voile! Free AND easy … and no poking or wastage of resources. Back to the drawing board ATK. But thanks(?) for the inane attempt.
Why bother poking holes, steam gets around in the pot anyways. Just use 2 plates. This video is really unnecessary and is a taint on ATK.
seems loke a lot of pointless hoo-haa, it's probably better just to own a steamer basket
i'll be going for a holiday where a small kitchen will be available but I doubt they will have a steamer in stock. this is a great solution. thank you for the tip! 🙂
You don't have to throw it out, although anyone who is DIY'ing this doesn't already have one, which implies that this is something that will be used one whether a permanent basket or this thing. It'd be much more wasteful to buy a basket to only use once.
You don't have to throw it out.
This is like trying to pick up a dime with a backhoe. Wasteful in both time and money. Disappointing pointless ''tip".
lol the collapsible steamers can be bought for like a $1 if you look around right most likely 5. the pie plates cost about a dollar+ i rather pay just a little bit more than do 2 minutes of work that i have to throw away
