  1. I avoided electric can openers for decades 'cause I hated that filthy little cutter on them. I bought the H-B that you liked a couple of years ago. I don't open many cans but it replaced a manual Kuhn Rikon safety opener and I love mine also.

  2. I had trouble opening up cans with a manual can opener because of arthritis. I don't know how many brands of manual openers I bought in the previous 10 years. My husband finally bought me the ATK winner, the Hamilton Beach electric can opener about 3 years ago. I love that it cuts the lid from the side which is added safety and I recommend it. I still gloat over, it to myself, because I struggled for so long. The only problem I could see was if the electricity ever went out, I would have a problem. So I found a manual can open that also cuts from the side, as a backup. It has a large turning knob on top, though that too is somewhat harder for me to use, but it is better than nothing if the electricity goes out.

  3. Another example of the downhill slide in kitchen appliances. I am 74 years old. My mother had a GE electric can opener purchased in 1950. It worked on all types of cans, never tipped over, etc. Had a magnet to catch the cut-off lid so it didn't fall into the contents of the opened can. Never broke. Easy and safe for me and my sister to use as children. Eventually, the machine found its way to our family summer house, where it is still functioning perfectly!

  4. I absolutely love the Hamilton Beach can opener! I have an arm injury that kicks up when opening multiple cans for chili and this is a life saver! I hate things on my counter but this has earned a spot!

  5. I have had a kitchen mama clone for years. I got it for the safety feature of no sharp lids, probably after I slashed myself. It did the job I wanted but the time it took was interminable. I will be getting your winner ASAP. Because my current opener did the job, I stopped looking.

  6. I love my Tornado F4. Similar in style to the Kitchen Mama but smaller. Have had it for 4 years and it's never let me down. For those of us with limited counter space, lacking places to plug things in, or limited dexterity, the units like the Tornado F4 are heaven sent. Best thing about the "slowness" of them? You can multitask! You click it on, hit the button and do something else. This really comes into play when making things that require lots of cans – like chili with beans. I can open all my cans, hands-free, while simultaneously browning my hamburger or minced chuck.

  7. it's weird that the HB won since the way it opens cans is the exact method that they complained about for the manual can opener tests (the safety opener method–in the manual opener tests they said it left behind strings of adhesive)

  8. I have one like the first opener you demonstrated. It's works great. I don't care how long it takes. I open cans while I'm browning hamburger or sautéing veggies! Wouldn't go back to your choice!
