Why are there no rounded curved wide peelers? Every fruit or veggie we peel are rounded and I even suggested a curved cutter and haven't seen them change them yet!
Thanks! I am about to replace my old dull peeler, Ii guess ’ll opt for a Y peeler this go round . Let’s see if I get used to the different peeling action (I’m really used to a straight peeler so it’ll be a little learning curve ;))
I don't hold the straight peeler like you do in this short clip. I hold the handle with my four fingers, and then use my thumb to rest on the food I'm peeling, such as potatoes, using my thumb to direct the food toward the blade. Think of the grip you'd use for peeling with a paring knife. I get a better feeling of control, personally. Also, I've never had a problem not seeing what I'm peeling 😆
Love my OXO Y-peeler! The peels fall away, instead of getting stuck to the blade, and having to stop every other stroke to clear the blade (as I must do with my straight peeler). I peel toward myself, and the peels just fall into a nice scrap pile.
For me it comes down to what I'm comfortable with. I've used a straight peeler (but I hold it differently than you're showing) for 50+ years, so it's what feels right in my hand.
I've tried both, I think they are both good. I don't really see much of a difference between them. Maybe if I was peeling hundreds of veggies a day it might make a difference.
I love my Oxo straight peeler, I've been using them since the early 90s. I find Y-peelers awkward and uncomfortable to use, especially since I often peel apples and potatoes toward myself like one would with a paring knife rather than away. I wish I could sharpen my Oxo peeler, I get about 10-12 years out of one before it's irritatingly dull and needs to be replaced.
I like the Y peeler because its less effort. The other type sticks out to the side and wants to rotate as you pull or push it. This doesn’t happen when dragging the Y-type.
Anything anything to get you to spend money and keep their hooves on the influence pedal.
Ya, I remember this debate, when I used to work in a large kitchen, in a hotel. I was criticized for peeling potatoes with a paring knife.
For crying out loud! They're potatoes!!!
I had a peeler made out of s/s sheet metal with a fixed blade. It was like the cheapest one at the kitchen supply store. It worked. End of story.
Couldn't decide, so I bought one of each. Problem solved…

Why are you peeling those carrots? Just give them a scrape with the back of a knife.

Can't tell you how many times I took a chunk of knuckle skin using the regular potato peeler 😢 😅
Where can I buy a Y Peeler ? Please advise. Thank you.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I tried this peeler— ended up giving it to goodwill!!! The only ATK fail for me.

hard disagree.

True and it feels like shaving Mr. Potato but I like the ergonomics of a straight peeler.
Only thing, Y peelers are awful for small potatoes. the old fashioned straight peeler without the back is better for that !
I've tried them, still don't like them.
dont peal fine carrots,
the most vitamines are right underneath the skin

For the home cook, it doesn't matter
Give me the old fashion peeler, they're straight but no backs. Hard to find but much better than Y and i have a Y.
My older sister got me to switch, my mom refused – she wanted her old Ecko. The Messermeister peelers are very sharp though.

I don't peel away from me, I peel towards me. No problem seeing what I'm doing. And the Y peeler isn't good for that.
I agree.
I'm a big fan of the Oxo peeler.
For me, the wide peeler is awkward, almost dangerously so. And the simpler style is flimsy: this week, I had one fall apart as I was using it.
I just wish it were possible to sharpen my heavily used Oxo peeler.
Perfect, easy zesting into strips with a decent Y-peeler.
Why would you remove the skin from a carrot? That’s insane
I like the classic stick peeler with the one-piece bent steel handle that also has no back.
Oxo and the like screwed up the stick peeler with the less resilient plastic handle that requires a back of thick plastic.
I don't need to see. Like riding a bike, pealing becomes an intuitive action after a few years.
