The Only Steak Marinade You Need – Thai “Crying Tiger” Recipe
The classic Thai marinade for grilled steaks is really the only marinade recipe you need, and in the video I will explain why! I also share with you THE ultimate steak dipping sauce that no Thai person can ever go without: nam jim jaew. If you don’t eat beef, both the marinade and the sauce can also work for any other grilled meats like chicken, pork, or lamb.
I did not mention in the video, but on the blog post (linked below) I share more about the common Thai dish name “Crying Tiger” which this kind of is.

I heard that 2 1 1 1 1 in her mom's voice.
And I heard that "It smells so good" from her childhood.
I did something wrong with the dipping sauce. Its too tamarindy.
I love your sense of humor regarding the last piece of the steak !

Pailin u make me hungry of ur cooking 😂🤣🤣
Does it matter if your mortar and pestle are that sort of stone or marble? We have a smooth marble kind I have never used.
Who gave you a right to make me hungry? 😂
She's so whitewashed, she actually said, "…it's Asian but nothing here screams at you, 'whoa… too Asian.'" Everything she added was literally of Asian origins.
There was a restaurant in my home town that served a grilled beef salad dish they called "Tiger Cry" that came with Nam Jim Jaew. The beef was grilled but also had a powdery/crusty texture. Still have never figured out what that was. Best guess is the toasted rice powder?
Definitely adding this one to my grilled beef line up!

Is the toasted rice powder made from cooked rice or uncooked rice?
Hi, I love your food and I want to make your food, I like to have your recommendations for stone Grinder bowls. Thank you!
Can use apple cider vinegar to replace lime juice?
I like how you’re very proud of thai culture and cooking but also realistic enough to go “eergh” at well done steak. 😂👍
Is the baby talk to the meat as you pour the marinade an integral step? 🙂
We have a local Thai restaurant that makes Neua Yang and Nam Jim Jeaw dipping sauce. it is my husband’s favorite so I when I saw this recipe, I had to try it. I made it tonight following your recipe exactly. My husband LOVED it! Said it was way better than the restaurant. Thank you for sharing!!!

Where’s the MSG? Would be 10X better.
Ahhh…I see now! 🙃
I don't see a recipe!
Made this and my wife likes steak this way every time now. Thanks
Oh my I’m in love ❤
That looks so delicious! I have been wanting to prepare a good ol' tenderloin fondue with different dipping sauces. I usually just dry marinate with salt and pepper and then make up different sauces that catch my eye but that looks perfect. I'm not sure how the sugar will handle the hot oil but I think I will still put a little bit in the marinade.
Since you said the marinade allows the steak to be served with standard western sides – I think it'll go nicely with my usual homemade Caesar salad and cheesy garlic-bread. Yum!
Jaew = ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Your humor is cracking me up!!!! 😹 Great way to start the day, and I think using these grilling techniques will be a great way to finish it 😻
"yoink" 😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹
Oooooooh. Did this tonight with a serving of pad moon sen. (Your lock down recipe) this dipping sauce is AMAZing! zing zing! My 6 years old helped me, he has a blast and loved it. (Well not the dipping sauce, but I. Add it mild with goshugaru instead of cayenne pepper) but he loved the meat!
Thank you for sharing those lovely recipes! Greetings from the Canadian Rockies! So close yet so far!
