This demo does not follow the full procedure for lighting the grill with this method. Make sure the gas burners are off, light the match, put the match near the burner, and turn the gas on. That avoids any gas build up and nasty surprises (BOOM!).

If i can get to see the end on the chain, i believe it's for clearing out the burner holes. Spiders build webs in these there holes.

what i did was turn on the gas with the lid closed then lit it through a gap. torched all the hairs way up my arm and couldn't move my fingers for a few minutes.

That thing is way over engineered for a lightning strike.
Just like it took me till I was 16 years old to learn that turning on the interior light in your car while driving is not illegal
