Which Canned Whole Tomato is Best? | The Taste Test
Lisa McManus is joined by Jack Bishop to taste their way through different canned whole tomatoes to see which deserves a spot in your pantry. The two discuss the pros and cons to tomatoes packed in juice versus puree, and are surprised by which brands come out as winners.

You should have added Red Pack to your test. They are great.
This was kinda hard to watch.
There is nothing wrong with American tomato brands.
THIS GUY IS THE SWEETEST MAN ON TV..!!!! JUST LOVE WATCHING HIM…..
Metal cans seriously affect tomato taste acids with tin!
Whatever tomatoes that are the cheapest, and the style i need im getting. Tomatoes are tomatoes to me regardless of where there grown. It's whatever seasoning thats in it is what is the deciding factor.
Pacific Coast is my go to, which isn't tested. Price and taste is right.
Safeway brand “San Marzano-style” tomatoes are grown in CA and are what I choose over, say, Cento, to make Marcella’s butter sauce, etc. Def check them out if you’ve got a Safeway near you.
How you dont have Bianco di Napoli tomatoes on here is craaazyyyyyy
Cento is not DOP. It is certified by Agri-Cert, an independent third-party agency. They are held to a high standard, but that standard is not DOP. It is the first answer on the FAQ on their web site.
Lidia has been saying this for years. ❤❤❤❤ I love both of your shows.
I know most people don’t eat them straight out of the can. But that was the way my dad used to eat them. He put them in a bowl with lots of pepper and ate them with crackers. That was one of his favorite snacks
Citric acid 👎👎👎
Pastene.
Loved Jack Bishop, seemed like such a pleasant guy.
Mutti is the best
Cento San Marzano or stay home. Hunts is not in the same league.
Have to agree I only use Cento.
You seem to be obsessed with San Marzano which, I understand, is a sweet tomato.
The first time I learned about San Marzano was at a restaurant that put them into a dish that should not have had a sweet base to it.
I will look for the Cento. And, I'm impressed that you could pronounce Cento correctly at the end.
I wish you had included Mutti in your test
The Cento San Marzanos are what I use when making your "Pasta with Sausage Ragu" recipe.
The Cento is NOT D.O.P. It is misleading advertising by putting "certified" on the label which means nothing. It will have "D.O.P." printed on the can if it is Denominazione d’Origine Protetta.
Cento is NOT DOP btw
LOL at the Muir Glen certified organic California tomatoes that then proceed to pack the can with citric acid and calcium chloride – but I'm sure its organic citric acid and calcium chloride. The only thing I know about calcium chloride is that it is used in industrial tires to add weight and is terribly corrosive. That tin pretty much sums up the hypocrisy of "organic" foods.
You don't have any of the top Italian brands. I use Cento because it's all I can get.
The answer is Afeltra. Period.
Jack Bishop's taste test's are my favorite part. I buy Cento because Lidia Bastianich uses them. They're better tasting than fresh US tomatoes. I wish we could breed US tomatoes to have more flavor like Italian ones have.
Does the winner have that harmful chemical coating on the can surface?
Redpack tomatoes cans their tomatoes with tomato juice.
Why are his M. O. O. B. S bigger than my E’s??
When making a recipe where the tomato is the highlight ingredient, the best is the best. For Chili or stews, it doesn't really make a difference, because the spices and other flavors will detract. For sauce and pizza, always choose the best and keep it simple, let the tomato do the talking.
I dont need to watch someone actually spend 28 mins eating tomatos. Just skip to the part where you rank the brands, like you do in all the other videos.
Thanks! Would have liked to see how Red Pack would have done in the taste test but I'm confident they wouldn't have beat Cento.
I love your show, reviews and all of your personalities (here it comes, but you should have educated the general public about the actual certification stamps for San Marzano tomatoes which is absolutely the defining opinion on whether the tomatoes in the cans are in fact San Marzano tomatoes and if I am not mistaken Cento does not have those stamps. Also why no California brands of Tomatoes? East coast pizzerias have been using and continue to use California brand tomatoes, like Di Napoli or Stanislas (although they don’t make a retail can). You missed an opportunity there. Thanks
We always keep a Costco 3-pack or two of Cento in the pantry. Excellent tomatoes.
Love cento and Muir Glen. However, whenever I use Cento, I discard the packing sauce/puree and only use the tomato itself.
Thanks for a great video on the all important tomato. I just made a sauce last night using the Cento whole and Cento crushed which cooked up very nicely. I too noticed the thick puree in which the whole tomatoes were packed.
Rega is better than Cento, though admittedly harder to find.
I really like Fumanos, brand
Sorry I have tried Cento, they are horrid according to me. You should have tested Mutti, and Stranese, I do like the San Merican by Simpson are very good I and a lot of others thing so too.
Try using Contadina
Unfortunately you didn’t test the best, Scalfani.
How could a can of tomatoes be organic if it has calcium chloride in it?
Siete italo-americani.
Bianco DNapoli is my favorite for sauces.
