The Test Kitchen’s Lisa McManus explains the importance of a good clip-on probe thermometer. A well-designed, high-precision tool is a cook’s best friend since it can take away a lot of guesswork in the kitchen.

The accuracy, easy interface, and longevity of our winning ChefAlarm are well worth the investment. This thermometer, with an ovensafe probe, was the most accurate among those we tested—plus, it had an intuitive design. It’s the only model we tested that can be calibrated; we also liked the programmable high- and low-temperature alarms, the adjustable volume, the backlight, the on/off switch, and the small knob on the probe that stayed cool for over-the-pot adjustments.

America’s Test Kitchen is the most-watched cooking show on public television—up to 2 million viewers watch each episode. The show is filmed in the test kitchen of Cook’s Illustrated magazine, located just outside Boston.
Each episode features recipes we’ve carefully developed to make sure they work every time. Christopher Kimball and the test cooks solve everyday cooking problems, test equipment so you never have to waste money on things that don’t work, and taste supermarket ingredients to save you time in the store. It’s a common-sense, practical approach you won’t find on other cooking shows.

since this video is now 7 years old, is this still your best pick?
What is the model number of this device? The Thermo Works Chef alarm does not seem to around anymore these days.
Post the complete Temperature Data even the stuff you think is in error
If you want to be thought of as
a transparent medium for informed cookery
show people how to calibrate it
Just got mine!! So excited. Thank you ATK!!!!
To set the temperature, do you have to press the buttons once per degree? To set it to 450, do you have to push it 450 times?
0:12 nice
I have 3 different, Classic Thermapen, Infrared Yhermometer and ThermmWorks Chef Alarm. I bought them direct and the all work as well as expected. I tried other cheaper brands that didn’t work very well. Yes I would purchase again.
Just bought this because of your video. Can't wait to put it to use.
Own one, standard small phillips screwdrivers do not work.
can an inductiom burner damage the thingy?
what about when leaving the top on a dutch oven
I wouldn't recommend this unless just the name is appealing. Cost wise my Thermo Pro works as well. Now I find I must purchase (guess from whom) a special screwdriver to change the battery! I suspect if I get it open the battery is a special order too.
How do you recalibrate it?
As a cheaper option you can get the thermoworks dot
Says Made in China on the back.
Not going to send one penny to the home of Coronavirus. Get the Thermopen instead. At least they're still Made in Great Britain – until the CEOs sell out again.
just bought one from ATK's review, thanks for the help
I miss this format of kitchenware review, very professional and concise. I’ve made a lot of purchasing decisions based on Lisa’s recommendations. The newer format is too cheesy and reminiscent of infomercials.
"in 2019, this list helped me decide for the best meat thermometer scafe.shop/tbmt2019?2N hope it helps you out too!"
I got the ThermoWorks MK4 instant read thermometer based on ATK's recommendation, and I've become a better cook because of it. Thank you, Lisa and Hannah for all your equipment testing and recommendations.
