Why America’s Test Kitchen Calls the ThermoWorks Thermapen Mk4 the Ultimate Instant-Read Thermometer

The Mk4 is the newest version of the Thermapen, our longtime favorite instant-read thermometer. The Test Kitchen’s Lisa McManus explains how we tested the latest model and how it compares (and has the edge on) the Classic.

The Mk4 takes all the accuracy and speed of the Classic Thermapen and adds a few nifty features that improve the user experience: Its display now auto-rotates, lights up in low light, and wakes up when the unit is picked up. It takes a single AAA alkaline battery and is also more water-resistant than the Classic, capable of surviving a half-hour bath.

Our editors bought four Mk4s and tested them against the Classic Splash-Proof Thermapen, using them to take the temperatures of an ice bath and boiling water (to test their accuracy), roast chicken breasts, and caramel sauce; submerging an Mk4 in an 8-quart container of water for half an hour; and having both right-handed and left-handed cooks operate them. We found little difference between the two models in terms of accuracy or speed; both were very precise and read out correct temperatures in 2 to 3 seconds.

  1. You DON'T get what you pay for here. I loved mine but it stopped working after a year. I just sent it back to be fixed. I don't think that is acceptable for the price. When it goes out again I will have to choose something else. Unfortunately I bought these for my nieces too.

  2. I compared this thermometer with Mister Chefer thermometer. The speed of reading the temperature is the same, but the thermometer Mister Chefer is much better designed, it does not look like a piece of plastic, and the main thing is cheaper

  3. Yeah screw that! I bought the original therworks splashproof thermopen for nearly $100, and the display suddenly just started to turn on and off and not work correctly, and then after contacting the manufacturer, I found out that the company only offers a 2-year warranty on their products, so now they want to charge me $25+shipping to fix the thermopen. I can buy a cheaper instant-read thermometer for that! Fuck this company! I would not recommend them to anyone! For a $100 thermometer, they should offer a lifetime warranty! NOT RECOMMENDED!

  4. Uh oh, you shared a product you like that is a really nice product but costs more than $10 so now you'll get posts that say you must have been paid off by people who don't want to spend money on anything but want to be told that what they have is the best. I have foreseen it.
