well in the grocery stores in Pacific Northwest they are labeled the opposite of what you are saying. Which is why I was raised with that understanding too. We love both and eat them often.
I have been telling people this for years but no one would believe me. I finally gave up and decided it was not my responsibility to correct their ignorance. 😂😂
THANK FUKIN CHRIST!!! FINALLY! I used to work in the produce department for four different grocery stores over a period of time over twenty years ago and whenever I would tell people this they wouldn’t believe me! They would look at me like I’M the IDIOT!
You might find Japanese mountain yams (yamaimo) served raw at a sushi place. They are not like American sweet potatoes or African yams. They are crisp like jicama—and slimy like okra. Yuck.
So when most recipes, calling for sweet potatoes, in the United States, what we are really talking about then, are yams? Those things what's the tough outer skin, and that bright or dark orange flesh, tasting faintly of a carrot, kind of sort of? Those are yams? Okay, noted. But then, what are sweet potatoes good for? Because the few sweet potatoes that I have purchased, mostly on accident, didn't really have any particular flavor at all, at least that I cared for. I certainly wouldn't want to make a pie out of them.

I think my stomach has a very hard time digesting yams 😢

I wished they would have covered the purple ones labeled as Asian sweet potatoes in my local major grocery chain store (which are delicious)
Yep, yam is a west African staple and it’s definitely different from sweet potatoes. We prepare yams in different ways and I absolutely love it!
After all these years of wondering why yams and sweet potatoes looked the exact same😂
Ive never truly had candied yams.😢

Ok this video did nothing to clear up this confusion 😂

In the South, we call the cooked dish Candied Yams for some reason! 🤔

Thank You!

Take a walk down the Produce department at your local supermarket and take a look… yams are orange flesh, Sweet potatoes are the light ones.
On behalf of my father, who is from Guyana, thank you! He used to get very annoyed when he saw sweet potatoes labeled as yams.
I've always seen the white flesh ones called sweet potatoes & the orange ones are yams… this info is incorrect.
Now I don't know if I've ever had yams
Sweet potatoes are sweet? They just taste like bitter or sour or something
There are also white sweet potatoes. They are just like the orange sweet potatoes except for the color.
So all those labeled yams are never yams? All different colored ones are also sweet potatoes?
Are yams also called yuca or cassava?
When I was younger we used to get the yams with the white flesh…I remember them…but have not seen them in decades…
