  2. Where do you buy your flour? Is brand important? Sam's Club has a 25 lb. bag of flour for $8.48, so that is only 28 to 30 cents for 3 cups. If you buy King Arthur flour at the grocery store, your costs will greatly increase! One of our favorite bread recipes has just a little (1.5 tsp.) sugar and shortening in addition to flour, yeast, salt and water.

  3. I just tried this. My kitchen is colder than most. I warned it up a bit but still did not get a great rise either time. I ended you putting it in a warm stove for a few minutes and it rose a bit, but it still came out excellent! 🎉

  4. My Grandmother made bread similar to that, her was a 5 ingredient bread, and she would feed her yeast, while she did not use granular Sugar, instead she used Honey or sorghum molasses as the sweetener. She called it the Country / Depression/ War time bread. She was from the Hill of North central TN (Macon Country) is where she grew up , it all depended upon the time of the year when she would Use Sorghum Molasses or Honey. The best bread came from the bread made from the Wild Honey. As for the Sorghum molasses when she used it was just enough to feed her yeast .

She would raise her own yeast and dry it to make her bread, something she learned how to do as a child in the early 1900 in the hills of Tennessee. Here bread was very cheap and and very tasty with fresh churned butter.

  5. Does the melted butter that you brushed on the top of the bread leak into the tea towel that you cover the loaf with? Would most of the melted butter stay in the towel and then create more of a laundry issue? Other than that question I love the inexpensive cost of the bread. I will try it without the sugar that I usually use and appreciate your comment that the loaf will need to be baked at a bit higher temp in order to brown. Thanks for the clear instructions.

  6. Since I’ve been baking my own bread I do not have allergies problems with food (bread) I thought it was gluten but no it’s the additives to the bread to keep it shelf stable for weeks. Hubby and I just had a burger from a dinner and I’ve sneezed a dozen times since I ate and the bloating is awful. I no longer eat out unless very necessary. These manufacturers are killing us and that’s why I eat at home. I have to carry an epi pen when I eat out

  7. Wow! Thank you for another recipe, Robyn! 🫶🏼🤍 I haven’t bought bread in a long time now, since I usually make everything at home. Well except when I go out and sometimes stop by the fast food for take out!
