New Year’s Tradition – Pork, Kraut, No Regrets | Michael Symon Makes Pork and Sauerkraut Stew

This New Year’s Eve episode is a masterclass in why simple food still wins. Michael Symon digs into a deeply comforting Pork & Kraut Stew—slow-simmered pork shoulder, tangy sauerkraut, caraway, and smoke—while the table debates tradition, shortcuts, and what actually matters when you’re cooking for people you love.
The conversation stays unfiltered and sharp as the trio breaks down why certain “old” dishes never die, how regional food memory shapes taste, and why over-engineering comfort food is usually a mistake. Expect laughs, strong opinions, and the kind of cooking that smells better the longer it sits.
This episode is about trusting the pot, letting ingredients do the work, and not apologizing for food that sticks to your ribs.

  1. I totally get what Michael is saying , why go to restaurants that obviously serves meats and dairy products and ask for vegan or vegetarian dish that is prepared separately or change everything on the dish, stay home and cook your own meals 😂😂

  2. Last comment: Carla I started watching The Chew in the 2nd season. I could tell you were nervous and hesitant in front of the camera but still so enjoyable to watch. That said I have loved so much watching you come into your own on screen and being able to articulate what an actual food “mad scientist” you are . I’ve learned so much from watching you. PS- I made pecan granola last week and each time I checked, it needed a minute or 2 more. Girl it not done not done burned! 😂😂😂😂 I’ve been eating it anyway. ❤

  3. I’m not sure which meals is more my favorite…Thanksgiving (for all the sides) or New Year’s Day (food memories and just special to me) It’s a toss up!

Onto the bean debate, I also don’t rinse my canned beans when making chili or soup. But the viscosity and taste is off in my soups/chili if I rinse them. I do rinse for other dishes.

  4. I made saurkraut with my Grandmother! She also taught me how to make different types of pickles and to can them. We always ate pork and saurkraut over mashed potatoes on New Year's Day. The recipes you share are fantastic. Just love you all. Happy Healthy New Year to you all …Nick too!

  5. You're simply the best! Love you all. Michael's passion for real meat over tofu was the best! True Story my friend brought vegetarian tofu hot dogs on a camping trip in the 90s. The damn things wouldn't char or roast over the fire🔥. Very weird ingredients

  6. My parents are from Croatia so as the Eastern European I get it you have to have pork on New Year's Day for good luck . Because Pigs root forward, signifying moving ahead and making progress in the new year Ive read

I love this version Michael thank you it's a quick and simple version. HAPPY 2026 😊

  7. As a young wife (in the late sixties) I found a great pork recipe. In a crockpot layer…1/2 in slices of pork shoulder, sauerkraut(drained), 1/4 in sliced onion, sprinkle of fennel seed, 1/2in sliced Yukon gold potatoes salt and pepper until you fill it 2/3 full. Add 1or2 bottles of your favorite beer. Cook on high for 6 hr then to warm and eat when you want as a major buffet table entre for a crowd or a meal for the family. If you do not want beer you can use a well seasoned chicken broth. You can also add large chunks of carrots and or a couple bay leaves. You can also use chops instead of shoulder but they should have a decent fat content.

  8. Michael Symon and I are definitely siblings from a different Italian grammy because everything in episode. Everything. (Also, Carla, yes on the liquid in the beans goes in the soup/stew/beans and rice dishes.
