The refrigerator at the grocery that keeps the ground beef is an open fridge, so it seems like it would be harder to maintain that temperature as opposed to your fridge closed in at home. They have expiration dates for a week or more when they put meat out at the grocery. How does theirs last longer in their fridge than in our house?
I have a question. If raw ground beef can only be used within 2 or 3 days in your refrigerator at home after purchase, then why is there sometimes an expiration date in the fridge at the grocery store for 2 weeks? I bought raw organic grass fed ground beef (sealed in an air tight package) 7 days ago and it has been in my fridge since then. The expiration date still has a week left to go (on the package). So, would this meat still be good to cook now? It's been in my fridge for a week, but has not reached the expiration date and the meat is still red.
From a chemistry perspective, the lower the temperature, the slower growth of microbes (the Arrhenius equation). If the goal is to extend the shelf life of meat or anything for that matter, then set your fridge temperature at it's lowest setting. Obviously, that's not an ideal temperature for beverages but getting a 2nd fridge would be a solution to extending the life of raw meat. Or just lower the temperature of your refrigerator as much as possible.

My old Boss never tossed out chilli. He always just added more to the pot. Change and wash the pot 4 times in 24 hrs. That chilli was old. People knew and they still came for it.

I basically live alone, I make a sort of pasta dish from turkey sausage, veggies and pasta shells. I like to make about 3- 4 servings. Trouble is who wants to eat the same this 4 nights in a row? Not me. So I like to stretch it out a little and have my turkey sausage pasta 2 nights, then have a burger and fries then 1 or two more nights of turkey and pasta. My question: DO you think the turkey sausage and pasta would be good for more than 4 nights? The turkey sausage is precooked, I normally get it from the grocery store. I believe it qualifies as "cured" but I'm no expert.

Thank you for sharing this video with us. It really helped me to be more aware of how long I could keep some meat in the fridge without it spoiling. The one thing I get concerned about is how long does lunch meat stay in the fridge in the meat keeper?? Also sandwiches made at the grocery store in the Deli?

I'm in Florida. I camp in a small van some times. it has a small 12v fridge that can run 24×7 at 40F in my simple power setup. Mostly I refrigerate cause the van can get up to 100F inside during the middle of the day . But in our so-called winter, it can get down to 40F some nights. When I does , I have an electric blanket but don't have enough power to run the fridge and the blanket. I know veggies will be fine overnight at around 50F without a fridge, but how about cured ham , left over deep fried chicken with the skin? cheese? left over pizza?

I eat grilled chicken 4 days later being refrigerated. I’ve never had any problems and tastes just fine.

This information is totally wrong. I used to work in the seafood department of the grocery store. We used to sell fish for at least a week or so.
What makes the fish spoil in just 2 days just because you brought it home? What if the fish you bought were freshly delivered and unpacked.
I call BS! if any of this were even close to accurate I would have died 1000 times over. Raw meat will tell you when it is bad. Unless you have no sense of smell the nose knows.
And on top of that how long are meats hung/"aged"?
The processed deli meats are the dangerous ones the spices cover the actual flavor, they can seem just fine until you are on your knees screaming at the toilet.

BS!!! Anybody who does meal prep for the week knows cooked food will keep longer than that. Any food I cook for reserve in the fridge gets thrown out by day 7 if not eaten, or I'll freeze it by day 5 or 6 if I know it won't be eaten.

Well, tested 2 chik legs in the microwave and one tasted fine, other was significantly different, and not in a good way. Definitely off tasting. Looks like its frozen grnd beef again…
Edit: forgot, chik was at 9 days from purchase, and not frozen.
