Beef Rendang Recipe | One of my FAVOURITE Indonesian dishes!



Forget takeaways, nothing could beat this meltingly tender Spicy Beef Rendang! Each piece is caramelised on the outside, falling apart on the inside, and permeated with layer upon layer of creamy, spicy flavours.

The Indonesian Beef Rendang ingredients:
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tbsp cornflour
Pinch of salt and pepper
800 g braising/stewing beef cut into large chunks
1 large brown onion peeled and chopped
5 cloves of garlic peeled and minced
2 x thumb sized pieces of ginger peeled and finely chopped
1 tsp turmeric
2 lemongrass stalks outer leaves removed and softer inside bashed a couple of times with a rolling pin (you can replace this with 2 tsp of lemongrass paste)
2 red chillies chopped (variety and amount depends on how hot you like your rendang)
1 tsp tamarind paste usually gluten free, but check if required
1 tbsp ground coriander
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
½ tsp cinnamon
2 kaffir lime leaves fresh or freeze dried
3 tbsp dark brown muscovado sugar
½ tsp salt
800 ml (2 cans) full fat coconut milk

To Serve:
Boiled Rice
Chopped coriander
Green veg such as broccoli or spinach

  1. Your recipe is so simple and less hassle than the stove top cooking. My chef friend in Indonesia recommended similar method.
    But since it took so long, I prefer to double or triple the recipe. Rendang can be stored for a long time. Thank you

  2. Beautiful flavours and not a complicated recipe. My wife who’s not a curry lover ( spicy foods ) loved this dish. Having said that did not use the fresh chillies just a pinch of chilli powder. Thank you for demonstrating this we will be trying more of your recipes.

  3. At first, I was wondering what that was, but, until I watched till the end, you nailed it.. make beef rendang. Even though her technique differed from the original…It seems tasty and I want to try it. Love from Malaysia

  4. I’m Indonesian and we don’t use onion on our rendang and all the seasoning have to be smooth grinder not chopped the real recipe is

    Garlic
    Shallots
    Chilli
    Turmeric
    Coriander
    Lemongrass
    Turmeric leaf
    Candle nut
    Galagal
    Ginger
    Salt
    Sugar
    Beef broth stock cube
    Coconut milk
    Kefir lime leaf
    Nutmeg
    Cinnamon
    Star anise
    Cloves ground

    That’s it guys this recipe is crap and not the authentic Indonesian recipe
