Cioppino, a Christmas Eve tradition, is a seafood dish that has its roots in Italian culture, which was created in San Francisco. The name translates to “Seafood Stew,” and it is a fitting description for this seafood dish, which can include a variety of seafood, such as shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops and white fish.
The tradition of eating seafood on Christmas Eve dates back to the Roman Catholic custom of abstaining from meat on the eve of a feast day. This custom was brought to the United States by Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. Over time, the Feast of the Seven Fishes, as it is sometimes called, has become a beloved tradition for many Italian-American families.
While the exact origins of the “seven fishes” part of the tradition are unclear, it is believed to symbolize the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church, the seven deadly sins, or the seven virtues. Some believe that the number seven is simply a lucky number. Regardless of its origins, the Feast of the Seven Fishes has become a festive and delicious way to celebrate Christmas Eve.
The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a wonderful way to bring family and friends together to celebrate the holiday season. It is a tradition that is rich in history and culture, and it is sure to be enjoyed by all.

Nice relaxed approach to good cooking
Made this on Christmas Eve, and it was a huge success. Thank you gentlemen!
When did you add canned tomatoes??? It looks like you changed to tomato paste.
Here is a tip to cutting onions with no tears; peel the skin and place your onion in the freezer for 10-15 minutes prior to cutting. And, when chopping always leave the root on the onion. Works everytime 😉
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year guys!
I rally enjoyed it
I love you guys. I feel like we are related. Happy New years BUON ANNO
Thanks guys!!! Now I know what I'm making for new years day dinner! ❤
I bought one of those cheap 9” fans at Home Depot and when I cut onions I set it in front of the cutting board to pull the air away from me. It works great but doesn’t do much for anyone sitting downwind. You guys videos are always thumbs up. Keep them coming.
Merry Christmas guys
Merry Christmas Boys
Where do you buy your clams? I'm trying to find them here in Dallas but they're hard to come by.

Love to try this as one of the 7 fishes. Great recipe!
We'll be going to a family Feast of Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve (there'll be some Eyetalaians there…lol), but I don't think anybody's makin' Cioppino. Oh well, I'm makin' a Stromboli for those who don't want only fish. This looks damn good, I may do it for New Year's Eve just for us.
Is it ok yo substitute clam juice with fish stock? Clam juice is hard to get in Europe.
