As a native Memphian, I can confirm, that is an authentic Memphis-style rub. I skip the oregano and thyme and do 3 parts paprika, 1 part chipotle chili powder. It adds a smoky flavor that balances nicely with the brown sugar.
If you want more of a mole flavor, add a little bit of cinnamon and dutched cocoa powder too! (Chili seasoning is basically the same thing as rib rub.)

I understand the argument to leave the membrane, but I don't understand seasoning the membrane side if you leave it on?
