– Internal temperature sensor that automatically maintains temperature control to prevent boiling
– Internal insulation that prevents hot spots and maximizes cooking efficiency
– Handles that are large and easy to grip and that stay cool
WHAT WE EXAMINED
We tested eight 6- to 7-quart slow cookers, preparing a variety of recipes using both low and high temperature settings and varied cooking times. We used temperature probes to map heating patterns, and a panel of testers evaluated how easy the cookers were to use and clean. We also dismantled a set of the cookers to understand the placement and type of heating elements they contained. All slow cookers were purchased online.
COOKING
We prepared boneless, skinless chicken breasts; whole bone-in turkey breast; and pot roast. We evaluated the texture and flavor of the food and rated the cookers on the uniformity of cooking. We did a final round to test the built-in browning function, when available. We gave highest marks to cookers that produced evenly cooked, juicy, and tender foods every time.
EASE OF USE
We evaluated how easy the cookers were to fill, set, and maneuver, including the intuitiveness of controls, displays to monitor cooking, weight of the crock, size and shape of handles, and whether the handles became hot.
CLEANUP
We washed each model six times by hand and 10 times in the dishwasher (unless the manual instructed not to do so). We gave high marks to models that were easy to clean, with few nooks and crannies to trap food or water. We also gave preference to pots and lids that were dishwasher-safe and emerged from 10 dishwasher cycles good as new.
HEATING PATTERNS
To map heating patterns, we used temperature probes to track the temperature of each cooker’s contents as it heated 4 quarts of room-temperature water over a period of 6 hours on high and 12 hours on low.

I find your review disingenuous. I have slow cooked pork and beef several times in the KitchenAid cooker for up to 10 hours on both low and medium. It never cooks long enough to shred the meat, but the meat is tough!!!! It would be nice if you spent more time determining the best end results for food quality. It seems like your review came as a result of a paid product promotion.
We bought the Kitchenaid and it’s a total piece of crap … I’d fire your MIT engineer!!! I literally have no idea how this slow cooker won unless Kitchenaid paid y’all off .. no significant gaps between the lid and crock were mentioned nor was the shitty seal fix
Oh thanks so much. I'm in the process of choosing a new one and this sealed the deal.
Can no longer buy the model she recommended. They don’t make it anymore. Checked amazon and google. Too old to be relevant.
Great test, thank you for this video, every time I purchased something you recommend , I never been disapointed.
Is there an update to this? Its been 6 years since this review was made.
That just kills me. You took the pot to the mechanical engineers at MIT. I can't even…
I would love to see an update.
Very confused, I love all things Kitchenaid in general and was thrilled to see they won this review, however on reading the reviews by users of this machine they seem far from enamoured by the Kitchenaid slow cooker and it's now unavailbale from Amazon. Whilst ATC do wonderful tests in general, I really feel they should return to their tested machines and see if they're still performing well.
We bought the Kitchen Aid. It's terrible – the lid doesn't fit. So the the heat leaks out through the gaps and the meat never gets up to temperature. It is like the lids are made in one plant and the crock pot is made in another, and the two plants aren't allowed to talk to each other. So we bought a seal from Kitchen Aid (Kitchen Aid selling a seal is an indication of how well they think the lid fits), The seal doesn't fit the lid. You can't get the seal on and even if you did it would pop off as soon as you tried to wash the lid. It's a total cluster. I regret buying the Kitchen Aid.
Hi Americas Test Kitchen, we love your channel and base our kitchen purchases on your recommendations. However we live in Ireland and both of your top recommendations for slow cookers (KitchenAid and Cuisinart) are not available! Any runners up you might recommend?!
Fantasy of coming home to a slow cooker!…lol 😂…..good one!
Any recommendations for a small but good slow cooker enough for maybe two servings something around 2 quarts?
How about an update on slow cookers aka crock pot ? Thanks!
Ninety bucks seems a little steep for a crock pot. A crock pot ought to cost $20 and last for 40 years.
The reviews on Amazon for this crockpot are terrible. The lid doesn't fit correctly leaving a huge gap.
I ordered the KitchenAid crock pot through this link on this video and it only gets to 190° f on high, not hot enough to cook food. I put carrots in there for 8 hours and they were still raw
Can you please review the all clad slow cooker
wow, no second place ??

Where is the probe to stick in your food and set it to a desired temperature. I give this video a big Fail!
It's time to redo this, I'm thinking. Things have changed – whatcha got?
Here is why you SHOULD NOT buy the Kitchen aid. I bought it because test kitchen recommended it. It was decent. I honestly felt that it didn't get quite hot enough, however it did the job and it was definitely consistent. I have two boys 11, and 13 who were horsing around and broke the insert. Well guess what? the insert is NOT available alone so I would have to buy the whole unit again, which is a pricey $119 !!! If you have young children or any situation where this pretty delicate porcelain like insert could brake then I would give this one a pass. I am very disappointed in this unit and kitchen aide overall for not making parts available especially considering there very hefty almost double the price cost over there competition
Is the Kitchen Aid slow cooker STILL the best choice in 2022??
Thanks!
This slow cooker is trash. I bought it and it never gets hot enough. Save your money. Don’t ruin your dinner.
Need to get a new one. I have had 5-6 of them.
My KitchenAid slow cooker randomly ceased working last night and spoiled the pork I had in there. The “keep warm” setting simply stopped producing heat. I tried everything, and nothing got it working again. All the display lights still turn on, but no heat is produced. This unit is maybe 1-1.5 years old. I use it weekly. Bummer, as I’m unlikely to replace it with the same make/model, but don’t know what is better in 2022.
Thank you!
What a terrible video. This is literally just trying to farm out your website subscription. You have an old video with clearly old information(the slow cooker you recommend has terrible reviews… clearly making some pocket money by selling junk to people) yet your website states this test was updated only a month ago. What a horrible company you are.
This is excellent I wish it wasn’t so old lol
Shut up 🤫
Seriously they don’t work
Thanks you so much that was a great help
I love you KitchenAid guys
ATK, guys have you all done an update to this video, I am in the market for a slow cooker and I only buy products you test and recommend. Great video as always, thanks for taking the time, energy, and costs to brings us the best products on the market.
This video is now 5 years old!! 😕 Time to bring this video up-to-date!! 2021
Anyways..I always use a pressure cooker fo my meals.. It’s fast..all meats turn out tender, juicy & savoury no matter what Brand you use! Stews come out with the most exquisite flavours & the added plus is that veggies retain all their vitamins & minerals..whereas slow cooking just fuses out the nutrients!!
Pressure Cookers can do no harm in my book & now with the new-comers such as mine, you can cook a tender juicy chicken or Pork Butt fast & after you can crisp a nice crusty skin on it.. The sky’s the limit with these new Pressure Cooker Crispers with Fryer bases.
Bonus…Lower electric bills..🥳 I hardly use my oven anymore! Don’t even know why I’m looking at Slow Cookers! My son has a Cuisinart & he always winds up frustrated with the results mentioned in this video…
What I’m searching for is a good little 2 person Rice Cooker & also a practical & efficiently simple Toaster Oven to cook pizzas, cookies & re-heat my leftover meals… I used to have a 1980’s Black & Decker T.Oven that was big & powerful enough to roast a 4 1/2 pound chicken & cook my pastries… It died 5 years ago & I’ve been buying & returning these new ovens ever since. Too many useless buttons that rapidly break down!!
I want appliances that are Powerful & Efficient..not..Expensive & Frustrating! Whenever I think I’ve found that jewel of a T. Oven.. reviews much like in this video, crush my illusions!!🙁! Wish Black & Decker would come back to its 70’s & 80’s #1 spot…
You’d do better going to every Brand’s WebSite to look at the latest user reviews!! Just my opinion no one asked for! 😉
I wish all of you luck finding your Slow Cooker.. 😉
My mom gave her Ninja with the thin dark insert because she never used it. I made a roast in it and it came out tasting like the metallic material that it’s made of and was nasty. I loved my Hamilton Beach that I used to have. I like the fact that the Kitchen Aid had the extra insulation though. I’ll check that out.
Slow cooker is designed for just that – slow cooking, so it should have an on and off light and dial for setting it on warming, high, and low. Nothing else.
I wish this woman would brush her hair once in awhile…
.HUGH MISTAKE! Recently bought model# 33185, Hamilton Betch 8 quart slow cooker from W*******t online. My reason for buying it, making beef bone broth; if you know about bone broth you know it needs long slow/low cooking for 12 to 24 to 48 hours to extract the nutrients from the bones. Since cooking time is long and I didn’t want to have to stand over a pot for hours and get up from bed to check on it after an absolutely exhausting week, I thought this would be a good solution…(4.6 star rating with 772 reviews)….WRONG!!! Even though I checked to make sure it would heat up…I never expected that after 2 1/2 hours set on “HIGH”, this crappy slo-cooker wouldn’t be able to heat up enough to bring 8 quarts of bones and water to a low simmer…But no, not a bubble insight! $57 worth of ingredients…trashed, plus 3 days of running around to gather them…plus no broth to help heal me…all wasted because of this weak piece of crap made in China!
0:36 geez
What about lead and chemical leashing in the food, no thanks
The new Crockpot™ Express 6-Qt Oval Max pressure cooker is a game changer
Honey what was wrong with that chicken ? THERE IS NO COLOUR 😒
This is a wonderful video but, it is 5 years old.
Do you think the new Kitchen Aid slow cooker
is still the best? Or would it be best to wait for
a new review?
Thank you,
Jeff
