$30 for a can opener. I'll go frozen.
I actually saw this on TV. One thing I think would help these review segments, on screen CAPTIONS when you name the recommended products. I heard "Sizzler" as the brand of the better safety can opener. I do not regularly use captions when watching TV. On my TV they are a pain to turn on and distracting. Too often I miss the model when you simply state the name.
You keep picking up that SwingArm. Made in the USA, it will safety cut, just put it on its side. I use it at a restaurant going on 5 years. It has cut MILES of can. and still works as brand new.
Now do a review of a free-standing electric can opener of the "safety" for my 92 year old mother who needs a new can opener and her arthritis is bad.
The woman looks very different than before.
Any lefthanded can openers?
Battery operated safety opener for the win !
I've had an OXO can opener for at least 10 years which sees lots of use (I cook 2 meals a day) and still looks new and works perfectly every time. Some of the comments here that question how OXO wins so many ATK tool reviews suggest something nefarious going on. But if you have personal experience with OXO products, you know how good they are, and at a fair price for their quality, functionality, and longevity. They've probably produced a few duds over the years, but nothing I've bought.
I haven't ever used a so-called "safety" can opener, but if it exposes the top sharp edge of the can itself, I fail to understand how that's safer. Either way you have to deal with a sharp edge somewhere.
I switched to a "safety can" version about a decade ago and I love it. I will also add that there actually is a slight tactile feedback when you finally go all the way around the can as it gets noticeably easier/faster in its movement (it's definitely not nearly as noticeable in a traditional can opener, but it's there). But really, the pros of the safety can opener far outweigh the cons IMO.
3 words: Nogent Super Kim… Sadly, not all can lids are consistent or standardized… I tried the horizontal 'safety' style opener but had too many frustrating experiences with a unopened & jagged can… Super Kim's cut thru them all, no sharp interior edges, small, and versatile… Leave it to the French
You can use the first traditional opener to cut the top off also.
Why am I watching this?
How about the one that keeps the cut steel out of the content…thinking of alzeihmer 😂
I have to laugh. I knew it would be the OXO good grips before I even watched the video. It's always OXO for every review they do. Very predictable.
A “ safety” can opener?.. My God have we become that stupid. I don’t know if that “safety “ can opener would be easy for the elderly to attach properly. Though maybe the tester struggled a bit to attach it properly. No mention if the force needed to turn the safety opener was the same or more or less than the standard opener. I will stick with my tried and true “ dangerous” openers.
i need a new one, mine is junk
I got a safety style years ago, it's weird at first but once I got used to it I love it!
Which countertop electric model do you recommend?
The only can opener you need is at least 40 years old and can be purchased at any thrift store for $.50. It's American made and will last forever. Modern can openers are cheap Chinese garbage.
You really messed this one up. The sideways "safety" openers have two fundamentally different types. Ones with one handle and ones with two handles that also puncture the can with a blade. So there are three distinct groups with yet further differing pros and cons.
Don't most cans nowadays come with those snap-off tops, like a Coke can? I haven't used a can opener in quite a while now.
