How to BBQ Japanese-style with a Shichirin!

In this video, I’ll teach you about the amazing, compact, affordable, traditional Japanese BBQ – the SHICHIRIN. It’s an entirely different way to grill meat, fish, veggies, and even desserts, and their small size makes them ideal for occasional use or to pack into the car for outdoor adventures. I’ll also share my recommendations for charcoal and other accessories to grill Japanese foods such as yakitori, atsuage, aji-no-mirin, yaki onigiri, and more. I’ll even teach you about how to get a set of stainless steel rods cut to size so you can control grilling and rotate skewers like a master. Where to start? Pick up a shichirin, charcoal, and other accessories at a home center. If you’re in Kyushu or Yamaguchi Prefecture, visit any of the 64 Gooday stores – so, watch the video to see everything I use and how to make yummy yakitori. And as a bonus, I also explain how to use the kakigori machine (shaved ice maker) that I found at Gooday to make a frozen cocktail! Use the chapter index below if you can’t wait.

  1. Hello. Thank you very much for taking the time to record this video in such a kind way. I know it's been many years, but I hope you can get an answer.

I live in an apartment and would like to know if the amount of smoke that this type of barbecue generates makes it impossible to prepare it here in my apartment.

Or if the only way would be to do it in a park or backyard. Thank you very much

Thank you very much in advance.

  2. Wow this friendly of an employee in a hardware store. That has to be the first.

Anyway nice video but it would be better without the music or at least at much lower volume. Also I wonder do you use this indoor too?

  3. I bought something like this at Odaiba once. More of a "hipster' styled one, that was almost 24 years ago, still gets used, of course the metal grill got replaced a few times over that period, used to use it on the balcony of my apartment in Tokyo LOL. Great video! Will subscribe.

  4. Oh, so that's what those grills are called for robatayaki. I'll see if I can find any at my local Japanese market 👍

Also, I would have used the flat kushi on the larger food items so they don't spin like that when you turn them. Makes it easier to obtain even browning on all the sides without having to fight with gravity.

  5. Awesome video! i remember going through the BBQ section at the local shops in japan but i was a broke student back then and had other priorities haha Starting to get into cooking things i ate in Japan back when i lived there and i managed to find a clay grill that looks almost identical to yours. Definitely not as cheap as in Japan tho. almost 3X the price.
