This is the only video I've seen that does the horizontal Cuts first. In my mind that would be the way I would do it. A lot of videos they do the vertical Cuts first then the horizontal which kind of makes a mess out of the onion. I like this video.
OR angle the vertical cuts toward the center and skip the horizontal cuts, taking advantage of the onion's layers
That initial horizontal cut is unnecessary and people will slice the blank out of themselves. Please delete this.
It is perfectly normal to leave tips in Europe if you receive good service, in fact if you don't tip it's quite rude it's just not a stupid requirement like America. LEAVE TIPS
Nice to see you make the horizontal cut before the vertical. I see many videos where people do the opposite, trying to make horizontal cuts through an already vertically sliced onion. Your method has always made more sense to me.
Gordon Ramsey has an onion chopping video. Similar technique but he does not use the horizontal cuts. He uses diagonal cuts, which I find less dangerous. Same end result. Less effort.
Horizontal cuts are like a third nipple. USELESS.
I have to agree with the other commenters who said there is no need for the horizontal cuts. The onion layers in combination with the vertical cuts will do the job.

The term "best" should be avoided in this case. Just call it a good, well-tested method.
I've always wondered if cutting through the root gets dirt on the knife. For this reason I always like to cut the root of first.

The classic European way, and probably the easiest way to learn, but not necessarily the best and definitely not the fastest way.
P.S. – and maybe a horizontal cut or two, but what this video shows is overkill and ignores the fact that onions are built in layers.
